I just bought my first Bronco (1990 Eddie Bauer edition, 351w; C6 Transmission) and it needs a little work. Bare with me as I am fairly new to working on cars in general. ( I'm not completely car illiterate though)  I'm excited to learn and would really appreciate any type of advice given.

So I'm getting my new Bronco next Sunday and I wanted to start looking for the parts I need to get it driving. Ill share a little info the owner shared me about what he's done and what needs to be done:

  • swapped the old transmission for a c6 transmission: needs transmission fluid ( any advice on putting how much/how would be awesome!)
  • he recommended I put in a new starter ( He doesn't think the old one will work)
  • Needs drive shafts ( front and rear)

I'm sure I found the right starter but if anyone is confident in a certain one that would fit perfectly let me know. Also, he had trouble finding a front and rear driveshaft that fit. I'm pretty sure I found the correct front driveshaft through bronco graveyard but I'm having trouble finding the rear so any measurements would be great. Looking forward to hearing back, thanks!

Hey AH, Welcome and congrats on your new Bronc.

Getting you the correct info is depentant on know fore sure what you have in your truck.  Fill in your profile with the correct info, any mods and the year of the engine and trans.

The fluid can be added to the tranny through the tranny dipstick tube. What type would be dependant on the year of that C6. However I have recently read that Mercron can be used in all transmissions if the system, ( trans, lines and any coolers.) were flushed prior to adding the Mercron.  Maybe a tranny expert can chime in on this.

Any good part guy can find the correct starter, but the correct year of the engine is needed.

Was the transfer case changed too?  If it is original then any stock shafts from a salvage yard would work. I would change the universal joints first.

( did the truck come without drive shafts?)

This can be a fun experience and more fun with the Bronc on the road.  Give us the correct info here and you will get good info in return.

Congrats again... and Good Luck

Hey RB, thanks for the informed response.  Currently I'm at Disney for my daughters birthday but when I get home ill contact the seller to get more specific info so I could fill out my profile a little more. From what he told me the transfer case wasn't changed and getting salvaged parts would be a lot easier on my pockets. Looking forward to working with you all and thanks again!

  • 1990 351 Windsor
  • 1991 C6 transmission
  • Rebuilt 2008 transfer case
I hope this info clears some things up

Hey AH,

Starter is an off the shelf part for a 90 ...no problem.

I'll need some others to chime in on the transfercase since it's an 08. Just not sure about splines being different from 90s and any electronic changes.

Good luck

Hope you and your daughter had great fun at Disney.

"From what he told me the transfer case wasn't changed"

"Rebuilt 2008 transfer case"

----------------which of these is correct ------------

For the dr. shafts.., check that the yokes on the front/rear diffs and the T-case out-puts are the same.

You will likely have to (truck on flat ground) measure fron U-joint cap center to U-joint cap center to get

the correct length dr. shaft(s)

If you have trouble, any good drive-line shop can help &/or custom make a dr. shaft.

Yo,

TRANSFER CASE;

EDIT..

YOUR BRONCO WAS BUILT WITH THE BORG WARNER 1356 MODEL IN EITHER MANUAL OR ELECTRONIC SHIFT ON THE FLY (ESOF)... (push buttons on instrument panel).

Borg Warner Identification; "...The model number is cast into the rear housing, and sometimes stamped into an ID tag on a tailhousing bolt. This is a Bronco 1356 ESOF..." Source: by Steve

******

1999-2010 Ford New Process/New Venture NV273F Transfer Case. Introduced as the optional Transfer Case for the 1999 Ford Super Duty® F-250, F-350, F450, F550 4x4 trucks and as the base Transfer Case for 2000 Excursions, the NV273F Electric Shift Transfer Case was used used through the 2010 model year. The NV273F is a fairly reliable unit that under went a number of design modifications during it's production life. The NV273F is a electric, shift, chain drive transfer case with synchronized 4x4 high range, 2.72:1 planetary driven 4x4 low range, and aluminum case castings. It was built at the New Process plant in East Syracuse New York.

The Ford version of the New Venture NV273 transfer case shares a number of common components with the Dodge NV273D transfer case, but the Ford and Dodge versions are not interchangeable

For parts identification purposes, a Round Tag is affixed to the back of the rear case. Stamped on the tag are the Model Number (NV273F), Assembly Number (10 to 11 character alpha-numeric number code), Transfer Case Build Date, and Low Range Ratio (2.72).

Hey Bully Bob thanks for the advice, it is a 2008 rebuilt transfer case. From what I've been researching I'm sure I have to get a custom built rear driveshaft

So I just received my bronco and Miesk5, you are right i just checked the ID tag on the transfer case. Hopefully I don't sound too airheaded by asking but will this make finding a rear driveshaft more or less difficult? Also they guy had the drive shafts removed and set in the bed with the hardware thrown in a bucket... I kind of wish they would've been left in

That's great to hear! I was worried. But I put in a new battery and starter today and added the tranny fluid so the last remaining bit is the rear drive shaft and she'll be on the road in no time! Thank you everyone!

This is what the ID said, IF you can't read it clearly I'll try and upload it another way. I'm using my phone right now.

So I put in a new starter and replaced the firewall solenoid in hopes that it would start right up, it didn't. When I turn the ignition it does nothing but a few clicks ( I'm glad I hear something)and the check engine light comes on. I replaced the fuses ( a few were out) and tried again and got the same results. If anyone has any advice on where to start I would really appreciate it. Thanks guys!
