Like what type of "better steering components"? It does have original power steering?

As far as your gearing vs. tire size, I would do one of two things to bring your power back up to par with where it should be. #1 I would change tire size. Go with a 35x12.5 and that will give you back some of the original power band. Option #2 is to change your gearing to at least 4.88. This will accomplish the same as going with the smaller tire. Either way, it is going to cost you over $1000 to get "original" power back. Tires you can count on being anywhere from $200+/each then the mounting, balancing, etc. That is going to run about a grand. The gears are cheap to buy. Install kits for both axles are about $80 each and gears are about $150 each. It is the installation labor that is the expensive part. So changing the gears out will probably run you about $1200. So really, it is a push. If I were you and I had the money to do it, I would go with a 5.13 gear ratio both front & rear. Then you will have the opportunity to go with the 38s and not worry about the power.

Check Mike Kirkus at Complete Offroad for gears. He sells Yukon, Percision, Spicer & Genuine gear products. He is also one of the cheaper guys I have found for gears and is an EB owner so he knows what is best for these rigs.

First off, whom ever did the power steering conversion should have just installed an original 73-75 Bronco system in it. They are the cleanest and probably the most reliable systems to go in. Saganaw boxes are pretty strong and if memory serves me correct, I think that is an F series installation. With any other system you decide (F-series, Toyota, Scout, etc.) that you want, there is always a fabrication issue involved. If you are going to change the steering system out, then do a google search on "Bronco Power Steering Conversion" and you can get quite a few good write ups. I have never done an F-150 conversion, but have seen them. The box & pitman shaft hang down about 3 inches lower than a stock system, but they are good. You just have to do your homework to get the right set up for you.

What kind of problems are you having with the steering to make the other guy say it needs to be upgraded?

As for your tires vs. engine capabilities, you have more than enough engine to turn big meats. The only problem that I see is that you have real high compression and you gotta keep the RPMs up. Climbing is a different sort of animal because the more speed you use, the more things you are going to break. If you hammer it right off, with a 39" tire and the amount of hp you are probably developing, you will be going through axles and u-joints fairly regular. I might think about de-tuning the engine or getting a different set of heads to lower that compression to somewhere in the neighborhood of an 8:1 or 9:1 ratio. Where you are sitting, 11:1, that is racing territory.

I run my 38's with a stock 302 but use 5:89 gears to turn them.

Looks like you need to regear and maybe drop the tire size if you want to save comonents.

You can run 4.56 with 38's but your are out of your power band abit. 5.13's would make it better for you. $350 or so from complete off road will get you a good set of yukon gears.

steering component swap is easy the only thing you have to do is drill the steering box to fit the holes in the frame. Dont drill more holes in the frame bacause the original ones are backed by pipe to renforce them. Im running a 78 F-150 steering box for 2 reasons.

1. The bronco box is like 6 turns and the F-150 is only like 3 so better for tight areas.

2. the F-150 box pittman arm comes out the back and I like it more that way.
