Well first I would like to say Hello, I am a new user here, however I am a three time Bronco owner all of them 80-86. I just bought my 84 for 500 dollars, the old owner my brother worked on the thing for about a year. He took off the front end of the engine to include the water pump, harmonic balancer, pulleys and distributor. All of this to find out if his mechanical fuel pump actuator was bad. Go figure, it was like I told him. Anyway after we put it all back together we got it started but it ran like shit and only for a few minutes. We ran it up a hill to get it timed and it never made it. It continued to run crappy and then finally it never ran again. We took it over to a mechanic and he told my brother that it has a bent rod. Now that the history of the beast has been revealed. I dont think it has a bent rod.

I am going to check the compression of the engine in each cylinder. If one of the cylinders comp is lower than the others does that mean that a rod is bent?

What else can I do to check to see if it is not a bent rod?

If any of you have a better Idea on what it could be please let me know. Thanks and I hope to hear from someone soon.

Robert

When I bent two rods on my 84 351W, it knocked like a diesel, JSM84

The shiny area on the bottom of the piston was from contact with the cranskshaft lobes. The rod got bent when the intake manifold gasket leaked coolant into the back two cylinders.

Well it didnt knock before It turned off. Thats why I am going to check the compression. It may be a valve rod or something like that. once again any ideas would be great.
