Got up a couple of weeks ago and fuel gauge was on E. Went to the store and it hopped around a little, but now it just sits there mocking me on E. I'm bad at math so I would rather not figure out what the gas mileage is. How can I fix this problem. I have been told that it is simply the spring has gone bad on the gauge itself and not anything with the fuel pump. Help please!!!!!! I drive across the state alot and would like to know when I am about to be stuck on the side of the road. What can I do?

I am an idiot. Where is the sending unit and what would I check on it. When it comes to piddly stuff like this I don't have a clue. Any idea if the it is the spring on the gauge itself as to how much of a pain or is it even possible to replace?

The sending unit is in the fuel tank, which you have to drop to get to. Alot easier to get help responses if you post the details of your rig. Look at a few of our signatures, thats why the info is there. And fill one out for yourself, then the responses will come pouring in. (well maybe not but sure helps)

Some people may not agree but I am believer in changing your fuel pump and sending unit if you at anytime have to drop the tank. The fuel pump will give you no warning when it fails so since you drive across the state frequently I think that would be a wise choice.

Try finding the wire that runs from the sender (On my 1990 the wire is smaller and yellow) and make a ground for it. When I was wheelin' a branch bounced up under my truck and knocked out a ground. I couldn't find the ground so I used a wire stripper and peeled back some of the wire insulation and ran another wire from the frame to it. Be sure to clean the spot on the frame rail really well before you attach the wire, also securely attach the wire. The guage should go back to normal.

I'm with FireLT90 on this one, too. Check underneath the floor for the wiring going back to the fuel tank. On my 84, it was really close to the shift lever for the C-6, and was worn through. Dropping the tank should be your last resort after checking or testing voltage to your gas gauge. Aside from being a chore to do, the fuel pump and sending unit on your 95 are one assembly inside the tank, and will cost $200-$250. IF you have a skidplate under the tank, the bolts can be a PITA to remove without stripping them. JSM84

Especially when the tank is still 1/4 full and you don't know it, and you're under it (based on personal expiernece).

I bought the fuel pump from Napa and the sender is only made by Ford now. It was 54.00 for me and 280.00 for the pump.
