i have a 85 bronco and a 84 F150. Both trucks have a 4.9L 300 I6. My problem is that when it is cold the choke doesn't open up all the way. From the alt. to the choke I'm getting right at 7 volts. Am i having a problem with my alt. or is it something else???

There is a relay between the alt and elec. choke, but if it was totally bad you would have no power to the choke. Check voltage to and from it, just trace the wiring to find it. I changed the blade-type insert on the back of the alt to a bolt-on type, to get better contact. Also check the choke linkage and **** it if it's sticking. I had soooo many probelms with mine that I place a stick in the carb to hold the choke open, until I figured out the power problems.

I had the same problem. Decided to go manual and its worked great ever since. You just have to drill a hole in the firewall and dash to fit the cable.

7V is correct for a Ford choke, but that only contributes to opening it. Sounds like the element is sticking and you could either replace the element and spring while cleaning the pivit mechanism or go manual like Broncoholics suggests.

Good luck,

You say the choke dosn't close. Make sure the choke stat is engaged properly by loosening the 3 screws that hold it , & turning it back & forth while just cracking the throttle open, the choke plate should move freely open & closed. Then set the index marks 2 notches lean, throw some ice , or snow, on the choke stat to cool it quickly, crack the throttle again & it should close, then start the vehicle. The choke plate should open about 1/8" on the top edge, if it dosn't the choke pull off needs adj. or replaced. As the engine warms up the stat will open compleatly, make sure of this. That should be it . Hope this helps. :)>-
