Hi,

can any one tell me the installation procedure for auto hubs,

i had removed the auto lock mechanism to in stall new wheel bearings.the auto lock mechanism seems to have become longer by about 1/4 inch.

could it have been that i had it in 4x4 just prior to removing it,

i have never had auto locks before,

this is a 1991 five ****** its my wife's winter car.

is there a trick to adjust the length of the auto lock mechanism so it will push back in to the hub,

do i have to turn the auto lock in a certain way,

regards

bill...

my opinion, go to auto zone or pep boys, and take and get the warn manuel locking hubs for about $125, and might even save ya some gas too.

***** the auto hubs, they are worthless. the manuals are much simpler to install, and much less chance of them engaging while you are driving and fuking up. do what CT said, go to a parts store and pick up warn standards for like 75 bucks. only takes a couple of hours to install

If they are maintained and this is his WIFES winter vehicle and its not wheeled autos are fine, on the fly shifting instead of walking around the truck may save him a good deal of grief. (i know the path id take) Good luck Bill.

OK, here is the installation proceedure word for word from my shop manual.

I'm leaving out the wheel bearing installation proceedure and assuming you got that done properly.

1. Install wheel bearings lock nut and lock washer

2. Install the splined spacer and the C washer on the axle shaft.

Note: remove excess grease from the hub-lock and hub splines prior to installation.

3. Start hub lock assembly into hub making sure the large tangs are lined up with the lock washerand the outside diameter and inside diameter splines are in line with the hub and axle shaft splines.

My note: If the tangs aren't lined that could be why you can't get the hub all the way in.

4. Install retainer ring by closing the ends with needle nose pliers and at the same time push the hub lock assembly into the hub.

5. Install seal bridge retainer (small metal springs) with narrow end first.

6. Install rubber seal over hub lock.

7. Install cover (make sure ball bearing, bearing race & spring are in place).

8. Tighten the 5 screws to 40 - 50 inch lbs. using Torx bit TX25 in the following sequence; Torque one, skip one, torque one, etc.

Good luck,

:)>-

Thanks guys,

I'll write back with any new developments,

the new wheel bearings did seem to go in fine, they even had the same part number as the original ones,of any part of the job i probably used the most time and care installing the races,

at the time i felt 100% sure that the bearings and races were installed properly, but now i have some 1% doubt, its such a long way for bearings to be out, unlikely, but stranger things have happened, lol.

i wonder more about the auto lock mechanism it's self, if it could have some internal fault, i will try a new approach on the driver side, removing and reinstalling the mechanism before changing any thing else, it's part of the mystery and challenge that makes this a rewarding hobby.

Best regards to all

bill...
