I have a 90 with a 351, 4 wheel drive and E40d automatic. Bad tranny. If I could swap in a manual trans for approximatly the same dollars as a rebuild I would go for it. Anyone been there? Is it practical to work through with the computer controls and such? Transfer case compatible?

Thanks

It is possible, but it will require alot of work. My friend did that to his bronco, and it took him forever.

The main thing to keep in mind is the clutch, and the crankshaft bearing install.

Before you ask any questions, a manual transmission engine has a bearing inside the end of the crankshaft that couples to the input shaft of the transmission. An automatic transmission does not have this bearing inside of the end of the crankshaft. Make sure you get one put in, they can be pressed in(it might require removal of the crankshaft  /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> )

I could be wrong about this bearing thing, but that's what my automotive class instructor told me.

Good luck......

I also inquired about switching from an automatic to a standard and based on my research it did not make economic sense to accomplish this modification. :(( If you are looking for more power for towing I would suggest finding a good transmission guy and informing him of your main use of the vehicle and let him making some reccomendations. My rebuild cast $2400 and consisted of upgrading the gears, belts, torque converter and installing a transmission cooler. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> I hope this helps you out.

best bet like Scott Allen Hill said rebuild yours and add a shift kit. or find a newer trans like 94 and newer they worked out most of the weak spots in those transmissions :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />
