I have a 1985 Ford Bronco 351. Mine did not come with an air pump. Can somebody tell me if I need one or not? What is the job or what does an air pump do? Help would be appreciated.

I dont know. It sits right above the alternator in the engine. I was told it wouldnt pass emissions without it.

I'll bet is an anti smog device.

The air pump you would be talking about is indeed an anti smog device. If you have emissions in your area, I believe you would need it. and I think it might even give you some more MPG'S which we all want with these rising gas prices. lol

Yeah at $3.20 (lowest price I've seen) that would help.

Its an optional part actually pumps fresh air into the exhaust manifolds so it could pass the sniffer test doesnt mean the polutants are not there , Just dilutes them so it could pass an emissions test . :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I'd just add that it pumps air to the manafold or Cat depending on the TAD (Thermactor Air Diverter valve). In any event, what Blade said is essentially true. The Cat speeds up the heat producing chemical reaction between the exhaust components to reduce the air polutants (Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen Oxide and Hydrocarbons). The air beig pumped in elevates the heat production by giving it some fresh oxygen to aid in burning those components. It doesn't do it at all times because under certain conditions it would cause the Cat to overheat.

Can you get along without it, well the engine could but you wil be producing greater volumes of those polutants. Also, if your state requires emissions inspections, you will probably fail without a Cat system. If they don't inspect older cars in your state, then the decision is up to you and how you feel about air polution. If you are going to take it off, take it all off. If you are going to leave it on, make sure it is functioning properly.
