I've got an AC question. Have an old R12 system that was evacuated and 134A put in. Now, the air coming out is fairly cold...but not nearly as cold as it should be. The low side is reading somewhere around 60 and the high side is reading somewhere around 10. That's not good, right? The AC compressor, at least I don't hear it, is not kicking off and on. But I'm still getting cold air. What could cause this...and what should I do to get the high side pressure up to where it needs to be? Is it dangerous for the low side to be up around 60-70? Any help would be appreciated!

Are you sure that you don't just have your readings backward? Were any of the lines removed and replaced when you had the A/C serviced?

High low side and low high side readings. Your compressor is bad. The closer together the readings are, the less efficient the compressor is.

Low side into vacuum, high side normal. Expansion valve stuck in closed position, clogged with debris or restriction in the liquid line.

High low side, normal high side. Expansion valve stuck open. Hot water valve (heater control valve) trickling hot water into heater core causing AC plenum to get warm. Open seam on evaporator case drawing hot air from engine compartment. Bad condenser fan. Bad fan clutch. Too much oil in system. Possible overcharge and what appears to be a normal high side is actually too high.

Right Fred!

also, what was amb. air temp when you did this?...

Some info

High low side, high high side. Overcharge. Dirty condenser fins. Problems with cooling system, condenser fan(s), or radiator fan clutch. Restriction in condenser. Clogged drier.

Normal low side, high high side. Restriction in condenser. Overcharge. Clogged drier.

how does it cool after conversion? i have heard the a/c system doesn't cool as well after converting. any input?

Nowhere near as cool as R12. I think I might have it evacuated and go back to R12. I think it's worth the money.

well that's lame. man i haven't even priced r12 at a authorized shop yet. whats it run?

R12 is way expensive. I don't know if I'll do it or not.

Check this out...when I turn on the recirculate, the air is really cool. When I turn that off and just have it on high fan AC, the air speed drops, and the temperature goes back up. Any ideas? It's a chevy...I'm trying to fix it for my Grandma.

Thanks,
