I have a 1985 Ford Bronco and I am looking at getting a chrome air cleaner. I was wondering if the air filter inside of it will need to be replaced after a while. Can you replace them or do you have to buy a whole new air cleaner. Some you can clean. Any advice would be great.

Let me have your opinion, should I get a chrome air cleaner or should I get a regular filter. I have heard that chrome ones are better. But I would like your opinion. Thanks.

The repacement filter from the auto parts store will do just fine, you may end up throwing your money away with the chrome.

How come? You can replace the filter inside the air cleaner. I have been checking prices and it seems that chrome air cleaners are cheaper than air filters. I really don't want to spend 47 dollars on a filter.

Naw...

$47 you must be looking at a K&N...don't waist your $$

Get the metal top & bottom with the filter already in it. (chrome, whatever)

OR...use what you already have...just replace the filter element.

Everywhere I look they are in the range of 35 to 47 dollars. I just dont think that a air filter is worth that much money.

The chrome filter holders take maintenance to prevent them from getting rusty and you are taking in hot air from the engine compartment which reduces the performance of the engine. The stock air filter holder, if intact, takes air from outside the engine compartment. Also if you want to spend the money on a KN system, get one that takes air from outside the engine compartment.

A $47 air filter, in my opinion I'd run it with out a filter! I think you're looking at the filter "box", not the filter.

Here's one from Advance Auto Parts for $7.

Dude, you know the air cleaner opens up right? It seperates in the middle and the filter is inside.

You can buy Fram air filters all day long at Wal-Mart. I like Napa Auto parts Napa Gold filters. But now I'm running a K&N. Depending on where you live (dust, gravel roads, lots of nasty sh*t in the air) you need to replace your filter at least twice a year. I change or clean mine every oil change because I live on a ranch and drive a gravel road several times a day...plus the pollen and dust in the air just clogs it up. Don't worry about what the air filter box looks like. Chrome or painted steel, they serve the same purpose...to keep an air-tight seal against the top and bottom of the filter element so that clean air can go in your carb. Unless you just want it to look shiny, I wouldn't buy chrome. A black air cleaner can be cleaned and painted with high heat paint if it starts to rust. Just my two pennies.
