I've got a '96 w/ 4w abs. The ABS started working intermittently about a year ago, then stopped working entirely a few months later.

I get code 63, slip sensed and no pump working.

I've heard that you can swap the pump motor out without removing the entire abs modulator and that the pump motor is not unique to the bronco, other fords have the same one. I guess you don't even have to get into the brake lines that way, just two bolts and a plug.

Anyone have any knowledge on the matter? A junkyard abs motor/pump assy runs $150 for the bronco and it's bound to fail soon if I go that route, it's probably in no better shape than my 96. I'd rather just swap the motor if it's possible.

Brakes otherwise work great, only the abs screwed up.

This is what Boss wrote elsewhere;

4WABS Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) Motor; "...pulled a motor off a crown vic, the unit it self was differant but the motor was the same. Cost me 20 bucks. OH and the wire conector was differant as well but I just drafted the one from the nfg motor on to the crown and it works great. That was 4 years ago. no problems yet...its only 2 screws that hold it in. And best part is it doesn't open the system so you won't loose fluid and won't need to bleed it. Now all you need to do is go to the bone yard and find one..."

He has a 96 too...

I don't have much time left on-line right now to look up the 4WABS Code you found... make sure it is a bad motor prob and not a connector pin "back-out" prob, etc...
