Facts...

1988 Ford Bronco 302 automatic

- Overheated waiting in line to get into Truck night.

- Burst upper radiator hose.

- Cut hose and refitted.

- Hit some mud and water, Burst water pump hose on trail.

- Cut and refitted, running hot.

- Let truck cool off for a couple of hours, refilled and drove home (1/2 MILE).

- On the drive home, truck would not shift out of first gear.

- 4000 rpms and no shifting. I still have reverse, neutral, and 1st.

- Cleaning off mud found small leak in tranny line coming out of radiator fixed.

- Checked tranny fluid and had to put in two quarts.

- ran it up the road and still not shifting out of first (I have reverse, neutral and first)

1st question - Any ideas?

2nd question - How do I go about identifying which transmission is in the truck? Is it stamped? Where? Can I identify without dropping the transmission.

I pulled the cover off to access the transmission and found this port (pics below) with nothing in it. Threads were clean. What goes here? Is it just a plug? Sensor? Could this be the problem? This port is located next to the linkage on the top half of the tranny, driver's side.

Could that port be the starter inhibitor switch? Not even sure there is one on this.

Thanks for the good news (sarcasm) Iron. Seriously, I appreciate the comments. I'm hoping this isn't the case.

You can check for the trans code on the driver's door safety sticker, or ID it by the pan shape and number of bolts. There is some info on tranny ID in the How-To & Tech Articles forum. JSM84

I figured out its a AOD and the port is the location of the neutral safety switch. Does anyone know where the female end of that switch runs to? I seem to be missing everything.
