Does anyone know if you have to have an orifice tube (otherwise known as an expansion valve) for you to have A/C?

I've had a few people tell me I do and do not but the most popular response was, "What's an orifice tube?"

Also if needed I have an '83 Bronco XLT

When I was first dealing with this question I noticed that the previous owner has bent the inlet tube to the evaporator core causing a bend inside the tube along with the O-tube itself. I managed to bend the inlet tube back to it rightful possession. After I remove the O-tube and there's still a bend (looks as it theres a tube within the tube where the O-tube goes in) will I need to replace my core or can I straighten this out?

That Location Link takes you to the main vehicle/year/model etc selection page; AZ has changed some URL's so here is the one that takes you to the Location of the O tube directly;

http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/09008...irInfoPages.htm

Doubt that the tube can be straightened out well enuf..

here is a comment by a major AC repair firm to sim Question;

"I'm running an original Evaporator, which means the

high line with the orifice tube in it is slightly

bent. This naturally makes the orifice tube bend

slightly as well. Does this bending of the orifice

tube affect performance of the AC at all? Things a

bugger to get in there without breaking?"

ANS:

That is the biggest problem in the AC system. Good luck on getting the old one out and the replacement in. I have my theory as to why it's this way but the new evaporators we make eliminated the problem. Sorry I can solve the problem your having now.
