I'm working on a 1994 F150 extended cab shortbed with the 302 and auto trans. The vehicle won't shift out of park and the ABS light is flashing. The only way to shift it is to disconnect the battery and shift it to neutral and reconnect the battery. I think its a computer problem. The owner was trying to fix the backup lights and did somehting, I don't know what.

when you press the brake pedal can you here a clicking or feel a moving motion on top of the steering column? if not there's a switch on top of the brake pedal that when the pedal is pressed, the solenoid on top of the shifter is unlocked and will allow for shifting out of park. since you mentioned the owner working on the back up lights, do all the rear lights still work? thats about all i know about 94 fords

Shift Lever Stuck in Park

Some late model F Series (Pick-up trucks) and E Series (Vans) may experience a complaint of "shifter stuck in Park".

These (and many other) vehicles are equipped with a Brake/Shifter interlock for safety. This system requires the driver to hold the brake depressed before the shift lever can be moved from the Park position. There is an actuator (solenoid) on the left side of the steering column under the dash that disengages the shifter lock when the brake is depressed. In the event this system malfunctions, the shift lever may be stuck in the Park position. One cause of this complaint may be due to a faulty brake switch circuit. If you experience this complaint always check for blown fuses and brake light switch operation before proceeding with other work."
