i have a 94 351w long block. can i put that in my 83 bronco just by using my old intake and carb my old engine is also a 351w. also are the pushrods all the same for the 351 or are they different if it has roller lifters.

I don't know if the mechanical fuel pump will bolt up to the 94 block so you may need to buy an aftermarket low pressure electric fuel pump for the carb. as well you will have to down grade or modify the wiring for the engine electrical ( alternator and ignition) the ignition can be done with distributor, old style coil and the 83's ignition wiring ( those parts you should be able to just swap from engine to engine) the alternator will be a different story.

once again there are a couple ways of going about doing this alternator system. one I can think of is IF the mounting brackets are the same or similar then you can swap the pulleys to use the serpentine belt system. you might be able to devise a way to wire up the newer style internal regulated alternator to work in conjunction to or instead of the externally regulated charging system. or if it is possible and practical you may want to convert everything to the V belt style system using the pulleys on the 83.

yo,

As Krafy advised, an in-line electric is prob best bet; depending on where that L block came from such as an E 150 series van, the engine mounts should be checked for fit and that is ez. to trim or replace.

Here is a pic by Lightnin of his 83 XLT, 351W, C6, NP205,

Rebuilt 351W, Edelbrock Performer Cam, altho it is not a 5.8 swap, but shows alt mounting, etc.

Electric Fuel pump, Shorty Mustang Headers. Saginaw P/S Pump, Soon to be OBA.

Drivetrain: C6, Rebuilt NP205,In the process of swaping in a Rebuilt Solid Front D44 Lincoln Locked with 4.10's and a Rebuilt D70 rear.

Some 351 vs. 58 info Notes I have in my site;

351W; "...The 84-87 351 ** has 4 valve heads and a 4 bbl Holley carburator;

The standard 351 only had 2 valve heads.

Out of curiosity about the original question I checked the 1985 Ford Truck Engine manual and the 1985 Ford Truck sales specifications on the 351 W engines available in 1985. The only major differences between the 351W ** and the 351W are the carburerators and intake manifolds.

The ** has a 4V carb or 4 barrel carb.

The plain 351W has a 2V or 2 barrel carb.

Both versions 2 valves per cylinder. No 4 valve heads available stock,

The intake manifolds differed to accomodate the different carbs. There are some other minor differences dealing with the air cleaners and vacuum hose placement and routing and linkages. There doesn't appear to be any substantial differences in the engine internals..."

For normal running a 7 psi is sufficient. The mechanical pumps ut out between 5 and 7 psi.

Good luck,

Pushrods will be different if the newer motor has roller lifters and all you will need to do is use the timing chain cover off the old motor for the fuel pump but dont forget the part the bolts on the cam for the fuel pump arm to make contact.
