OK here it goes

1st 3 characters - Manufacturer make and type

4th - character Brakes/GVWR Class

Next 3 (5, 6 & 7) Modle or line, series, Chassis, cab or body type

8th - engine type

9th - Check digit

10th - Modle year

11th - Assembly plant

12th - constant A untill sequence number 99,999 is reached then it changes to B and so on.

13 - 17, sequence number.

There is a build date stamp on the front surface of the radiator support, passenger side.

The safety compliance sticker which is on the rear driverside door post gives the most usefull info. ex. paint code, Vehicle type, Body (trim type, trim color, body style), Transmission, axle type and ratiocode.

That all assumes nothing has been modified.

Good luck,

:)>-

1FM = Ford Motor Company , make Ford, multipurpose pasenger vehicle (MPV)

my comment - notice it is a MPV not a SUV :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

E = Hydraulic brake system Class E 6,001 - 7,000 pounds

U15 = Line - Bronco, Series - U150, Chassis - Type 4x4, Body type - Bronco, MPV

N = 5.0 EFI 302, Cylinders - V8, Fuel - Gasoline, Manufacturer - Ford

X = check digit

L = Year 1990 (don't panic it was a 91 built in 90)

L = Vehicle assembly Plant - Michigan Truck: Wayne, Michigan

A01983 = Build sequence number (1983rd 91 Bronco built)

There is more meaning full info on the Safety Compliance Certificate located on the driverside rear door post such as weight, paint codes, wheel base (all broncos were 133 Inches), type (all Broncos were U150), body (seat trim and style, trim color), transmission, axle code, type, springs, tires, cold presure, etc.
