i have an 89 full size 351. at first it started out as fuel not getting to the engine bt fixed that. then the engine was recieving no spark got that goin. bt it still wont run. the engine turns over bt does nothing. i was wondering if there might be like a neutral safety switch or something electrical that cld be holding it back. if anyone has had the same problem. any sugesstions plz. worked on it for 15 hrs yesterday. i rebuilt the distributor, replace plugs, replaced coil, set the timing, took a fluke and tested wires for folw just so stumped right now

Looks like you have just about covered all the basics. Does it even try to start? I'd go back through the whole thing starting with making sure the distributor is set properly so that #1 is close to TDC when it is dropped in, if you had the distributor out, it is easy to get off by 1 tooth. Check to make sure the plugs are wired in the correct order. Being an 89 I believe you have an EFI which puts you at the mercy of a computer, try removing the SPOUT connector. That allows the engine to run at a basic timing. Also, pull the codes, they may tell you something you need to know.

Good luck,

:)>-

yea i rechecked the distributor. and checked the plug wires again. and yes it has an efi. bt ill try thr spout connector. and post my results thanks. and yea the eninge is turning over its like it wants to run just sumthin stopin it. like a safty switch or sumthin is keepin it from running. and one more question what would cause backfire out of the intake???

Bully Bob is talking about the inertia switch that cuts off the fuel pumps. There are 2 on your year truck, a low pressure pump in the tank and a high pressure pump mounted on the frame rail just about under the the driver seat.

Sorry about not answering the Neutral Safety Switch question. If it is not made, you won't even get the engine to turn over.

Back firing from the intake is almost certainly a timing problem. Generally that points to the distributor not being in the correct position or the timing chain having slipped.

You're not answering the timing chain issue...!!!

And., what is the spark at the plug wire like...???

Loosen the dizzy lock-down just enough & rotate dizzy while someone else cranks the eng. (assuming there's "spark")

Rotate the dizzy clock & counter-clock....if it tries to start/or starts...you have a bad timing chain/gears.
