How do I get the pinion out with the head stripped on the lock bolt?

Actually I mean the pinion lock bolt for the differential.

Sorry about your luck on this, but,

if the pinion nut is stripped, you may be screwed...

It is VERY difficult to remove the lock nut from the pinion without damaging the pinion itself.

A torch used to heat the nut may expand it enough to allow you to remove it.

If that doesn't work, you could try to section the nut with a carbide cutting tip on a dremel type tool, it is quite literally the only cutting tool small enough to reach into the yoke.

Cut the nut in three places to aid in removal.

Minor scarring of the threads shouldn't cause you too much grief, but be warned that any major damage to the threads, and you will need a new gear set.

Patience and best of luck to you, you will need it.

Allready have new diff, ring and pinion, and bearing shims. I meant the bolt for diff. pinion. thanks for the advice though.

I was thinking you were talking about the bolt that holds the spider gear shaft in the dif housing . If you stripped it out I was serious about the torches . Locktite is a wonderful thing but the only thing I know of that breaks it down is heat. Heat it up and try to get a small set of channel locks on it if you cant do this use a small cutoff wheel and dont get in a hurry and cut a screwdriver slot in the head of it then heat it and very carefully try to turn it out . If that dont work and you somehow break the head off past the threads is about an inch or so of just steel shaft that goes into the other side of the carrier so chances of getting it out after that are very slim. . Last resort is you reach in there with torches and cut the cross pin out so you can get the diff outta the housing and then put it in a mill and mill out whats left of the retaining pin. If you dont have access to alot of tools your kinda screwed. Thats a hard fix with limited tools . Good luck :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I am still lost on this. No disrespect to you at all.

Ok, the pinion nut

Outside of the diff, holding on the Yoke.

If stuck or stripped:

Using air tools of course spin in the tightening direction

untill it has rounded of all the threads. then pull it off. Been there, done that.

Center pin retainer bolt

Inside the diff, on the carrier

If broken off (been here to)

Get a small drill bit about 12 inches long

Get an easy out to match.

The rest is self explainitory

Sorry bro but these are the only two things I can think of, that you may

be talking about. Because I have no idea what a "pinion lock bolt" or a

diff.pinion.

I hope I helped a little though

I have had a similar problem. I used a dremel, grinned down the flats on the bolt. a little at a time find the socket that is the size just below the correct size, usually metric. Use a large b.f.h. and beat it on, use a 1/2" breaker bar and turn it off. Works every time for me.

if you are talking about the one that is in th yoke then it depends

a you said you are replacing the diff. as in the entire carrier or jujust parts (not the ring?) if the entire thing then it is better to replace the ring with the pinion in matched sets so all ya gota do is torck th damn thing off dont worry about the bearing as this must be done with the new shaft along with the crush waser

or if not replacing the pinion then i hope the axle is still in the truck cuz the wieght of the truck on the wheels helps you can either use a chisel to remove it by cutting the nut (carefull of the threads or like was said "cut the sides down to another size(just a little snug) and pound a socket on and go nuts with a breaker bar and pipe i would not recomend a gun as it may round easier and some heat wouldn't hurt either

good luck
