77 Bronco

I have a 1977 Bronco that has no spark out of the coil. Replaced the coil no luck. Thanks for your advice. Dave

Hi David.., welcome..!!

Check for voltage on the + side of the coil (key on)

If there's voltage there.., the problem is likely in the dizzy or the Duraspark module it hooks to.

BTW.., how did you check for spark..?

Thanks Bully Bob, I checked for spark by putting a spark plug on the end of the wire coming out of the coil.

When you crank it over there is nothing until you let off the key then there is a little spark.

I assume the plug was held against "ground".

Seems to me, the stator in the dizzy is testable, as well as the module.

---(at a quality auto parts store)---

However.., should one or both be weak or bad.., it may be money well spent to up-grade to a newer aftermarket elect. ignition, as opposed to fixing the Duraspark system.

Others on this board have made comments refering to the Duraspark as to some of it's failings.

I've not had a Duraspark ignition rig so I can't speak fr. experience.

Hey David,

From what you said:" When you crank it over there is nothing until you let off the key then there is a little spark." It makes sence that the problem is the triggering mechanism in the distributer. When you "let off the key.' it allows the magnetic field in the coil to colapse and produce the higher voltage that is terminated at the sparkplug.

First check the wire from your distributer to the coil negative(-) side, for continuity. If that wire is bad, the distributer cannot "tell the coil to fire."

If the wire is good, as Bully had said, a component of the Duraspark (stator, module) is bad. My thoughts on that is the components are so old it would not be prudent to change one component and not the other. AND again as Bully said, might be a good idea to change to an aftermarket ignition system.

One final thought....have you removed the Dist. cap and checked and actually seen the rotor turn? I had an occurance where the dist. gear sheared the pin, and the disy was not spinning.

Hello, thanks for your advice. I replaced the Duraspark module and it fired right up. Bully Bob you were right on. I had a 66 for a long time so the Duraspark is new to me. This 77 is a California Bronco with 72,000 original miles. I am now the second owner. I am really glad to be in the Bronco group again with people like Bully Bob and Rons beast that take your time to answer questions. Thanks alot guys!
