Cannot get fuel to the carb. 72 in storage for several years. removed and cleaned fuel tank, replaced sending unit, filters, air pressure to clear the fuel line, added non ethanol fuel. I put a clear in line filter on the line from pump to carb...attempt to start, motor spins, clear filter only partially filled. Engine ran for 10 seconds (+/-) one time. Will not start. Q? Will fuel separator tank or charcoal canister lines affect fuel flow? Clogged separator or Charcoal canister lines?

Not likely, the canister is there to collect fumes when the engine is not running. The separator, if I understand what you are referring to, is to prevent fuel from entering the vacuum lines.

Have you checked the fuel pump? Remove the fuel line to the carb and turn the engine over to see how much it is pumping, it should be a steady stream, (Pump it into a can or bottle just so it is not all over the engine). I'm betting your pump has a bad diaphragm. If the diaphragm is bad you could also get fuel into the oil pan.

Good luck,

Hey OD,

Your fuel filter should be completly full. Your fuel pump is probably shot. The diaphram is probably ruptured from drying out after sitting so long.

Carefully pour some fuel down the carb and if the engine runs for a few seconds, and the fuel filter is still not full, you need a fuel pump.

Good Luck

"Water" seperators are used on boats & aircraft...not sure what you're refering to either, except that unit behind the dr. seat, in front of the wheel-well on side wall. I've not seen a rig with all that stuff still hooked up. It made the EPA happy but as to any real function/help....who knows.

Like Seabronc says.., not likely a problem causing unit, nor is a fume canister.

Fuel pumps have a "weep-hole" on the bottom. Usually when the diaphragm fails, fuel runs out that weep-hole leaving a trail.

They can get weak however & as Seabronc said , visually watching it fill a jar/container is a good test. 1/2 a minute for 1 pint is a good rule of thumb.

They have check-valves in them..., a small bit of stuck debris can stop any pressure build up.

You didn't mention the carb. Did you check the needle & seat..? (could be stuck shut) Can you see fuel squrting fr. nozzles when operating the throttle by hand..? If so, RU gett'n spark.?

I think a vertical sitting filter would fill. I have a couple horizontal/clear filters & they change fr. full, to 1/2 full, to empty as they so choose..?? My rig never misses a beat so I assume the bit of air just never goes away. My neighbors rig does the same thing..

I agree with you Bully on the weep hole seeping. However Old Dude said the rig had been in storage several years.

That's a recipe for a dry diaphram. With that I don't believe he can't get fuel sucked to the pump to be able to leak. Carb may have issues too but with it having sat so long my money is on the fuel pump.

I gotcha.., anything's possible.

I cut open my last/old pump to see just what is going on in there. I was shocked to see it was squeeky clean.., & that diaphragm was as tough as the mold injected plastic they package products in stores these days. You know, the stuff that sends you to the EMERGENCY ROOM when you try to get it open..!!

The diaphragm is flexable however but., still tough to cut & looked new. I don't know what it's made of but, I don't think a bullet would go thru it..!! /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

We'll see if.., OldDude comes back.

Don'tcha just love this guessing game.... :D/ :-B
