have a 71 ford bronco fuel guage not working replace sending unit with one from broncograveyard guage still not working, pulled guage and saw one of the leads was broken soldered it back on reinstalled guage turn key on guage went over to full and pegged out turn key off and took a voltage reading at guage it was 12 volts, i was reading there is a constant voltage regulator on the instrument cluster which drops the voltage down to 6 volts, if the regulator is bad does at allow all 12 volts to come through. i saw one at broncograveyard for $31 but don't want to spend the money if i looking in the wrong spot, any help

Did you see yours...? (volt. reg) It's at the lower center on back of cluster. I believe it has one flat shaped bayonet wire plug & one "L" shaped so there's no mix-up. (It actually looks like a miniature volt. reg. about 1 1/4" long & 1/2" wide.)

(it also powers the oil pres. & temp. gages)

I guess you could test it...there's one (red nut-driver) ***** that holds it in place.

-OR- disconnect the fuel gage so it doesn't get damaged....turn key on & check oil & temp gages. If they don't "peg" then warm up veh. & check their readings. If they read correctly then chances are the volt. reg. is OK.

The orig. volt. reg's. have a mini adj. pin on them....you could try making a tool to adj. prior to buying new.

Lastly, be careful ....I bought a new one that didn't work at all...? B)

when i bought the truck the oil pressure and temp guages are after market, so they don't work unhooked from the engine. i took a voltage reading at the oil pressure and it was reading 12+ volts

I'm a bit confused...are you saying the two "oil & temp" gages are sitting there with nothing hooked to them ?

SECOND, which oil gage did you read...the stock one or the aftermarket ?

the previous ower went with sunpro oil and temp guages. the OEM oil/temp guages are not hook to the sensors, the volts readings i'm taking is from the OEM fuel guage lead and oil/temp any volt reading i'm taking is from the OEM guage leads

Then back to my 1st. post...one side of mini volt. reg. (if it's there) should read "12v" ... the other side should read "6v" or there-about.

If you were to leave 12v continuously, to the OEM gages, it will ruin them.

You didn't mention if the volt. reg. was there..? Is it..?

Also, do you get a reading -at all- fr. the "sunpro" gages...?
