Long story short, I bought 3 different E40D tranny's and everyone went out within a few days or hours. The first 3 were used from a salvage yard, bad idea yeah. at least i got my $ back. Next step was to get the last one rebuilt. $700 gone and it went in a week. Final attempt was the big money blower. a $3,000 tranny from Aamco. They rebuilt the tranny using all steel in the guts. The thing is one badass tranny, but how long till this one goes? The bronc has been inspected top to bottom for any mis-alinment issues. I've had 4-wheel parts look at it and another reputable 4-by shop in tacoma; they tell me everything is fine and it must be the tranny. It has held up for 4 months and also to some hard boonin or "off-roading" as some of you call it.

And I guess that wasn't much of a long story short either. sorry guys.

I can feel your pain , as I'm going thru the same thing with my 98 Chevy. Bought a reman. GM 700R4 for $2300, had it rebuit a month later under warranty due to burnt clutch discs, and still having problems. You're rolling the dice installing a used one from a boneyard, and it can cost up to $3K to rebuild the E4OD. Swapping to a C-6 is much more reliable and less costly, but has no OD.

My experience with tranny shops has been that 2 out of 3 will want you to overhaul a bad tranny, while the other 1 will only fix what's needed, like a bad sensor or the OD clutches. Always try to get the best warranty you can, and consider the labor cost to replace one.

Add on an auxiliary trans cooler if you haven't already. The radiator cooler mounted in the radiator doesn't do an adequate job. Luckily the seal on our diesel F-250's trans was the only thing to blow this time around, the first time the whole tranny ground itself into dust. So far the '96 Bronco is still good, and the '80 Bronco has a manual. [-o<
