Today was the first time I put my 88 Bronco into 4wd since I have owned it. When I did, it seemed to be okay. But when I got up to 30-35, the truck would shake pretty good. I am also getting a weird squeak up front now too. Any suggestions?

Thanks

check your front u-joints in eather your driveshaft or the axle ends. could be loose :)>- would be a good idea to replace balljoints and wheel bearings while in there :-B

4 Wheel Drive Wasn't Meant to go fast...

Plus, if was dry pavement, you probably screwed something up...

If you had it in LOW, that could be it, because the transfer case is geared to only go up to 25mph...

Take it easy next time....

Thanks for the great information guys...I have only owned the truck for a month now. I really need to go through the truck and check it over more. Just haven't had time, plus the owner before me said, "the 4wd worked for me last year...." if you know what I mean.

Thanks

why were you driving 30-35 mph in 4wd? the front driveshaft is probably slightly out of balance, causing a wobble at speed. does it shimmy at all in 2wd?

an 88 most lickly has manual hubs right...... not sure but any way if it does have manual hubs u can "shift on the fly" when their locked in up to the 45 mph. if AUTO then i would reccomend doing at 5-10 mph. less stress on the front drivetrain and transfer case when it jolts into running or spinning. and the hubs will last longer :)>-

Good point on the autos but i would shift at a higher mph(when i had mine, maybe the highest was like 25) BUT i would let off the gas completely because that jolt is rough....

I once had a weird shimmy on my bronco above 30 mph in 4wd only and it turned out the front tires were more worn

(badly) than the rear and this threw off the sync of the 4wd. I put new tires on and it disappeared.

Never thought about the tires....

Yes, my Bronco has manual hubs and is not the push button style, I have to shift it into 4wd with a lever.

Ocalabronco,

It's perfectly fine to drive up to 55MPH in 4WD High. Now, low is of course a different story. Check your owners manual...it tells you the safe speeds for the different gearing and engines/tranny's.

Out,

Snowman :)>-

i know the owners manual says UP TO 55, but why in the **** would you actually need to drive 55 in 4wd, unless you are running Baja? your RPMs would be screaming, even in 4 hi. the only reason you would be running that fast would mean you were either one wide open flat trail or on hard pack, neither of which require 4wd
