When I shift into 4 high I hear the relay clicking behind the pass. side kick panel, and when I check the front drive shaft it will not turn. The problem is the 4x4 dash lights do not come on. The lights do work when I checked them with a check light. Could it be a bad circut in the relay or something else. :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Welcome to the Zone > . What year truck do you have? From the sound of it, you must have a transmission with a shift motor instead of one with a floor shift. If that is the case, the indicator comes on as a result of the transfer case actually being engaged in 4x4. In any event, it is most likely that the shift motor that is bad.

Post some pictures when you get a chance.

Good luck,

:)>-

Sorry. Its a 1988 with the electric transfer case, I changed the motor and its good and locking the 4x4 in gear. as the front drive shaft does not move, but the lights in the dash do not come on.

Ok, so it shifts into 4x4 but the drive shaft from the transfer case to the front diferential doesn't move, right? Get under the truck with the transfer case disengaged, hubs disengaged, engine off. Try turning the drive shaft by hand,

it should move freely. Next, jack up one side and engage the hub. Turning the drive shaft should cause the axle on the raised wheel to turn. Lower that side and repeat for the other side looking for the same result. If that works, and engaging the the 4x4 doesn't cause the shaft to turn, then you have a transfer case problem, possibly a broken drive chain.

Good luck,

I guess I'am not making my self clear. The fwd works as I've been wheeling around. The problem I have is the dash light that say 4X4 and 4LOW is not working.

Hmmmmm!, how could I have been so confused @-) ?

OK, everything work but the lights. Well that is a little simpler. The lights are turnewd on by a switch in the transfer case. There are also 5 connectors between the lights and the switch that should cause them to come on.

One side of the incicator always has 12V in start and run. The other side of the indicator is grounded by the switch. If the switch operates properly, ie. grounds the line then you need to start working your way back thru the circuit. If you feel that you can do that, then you need to get an EVTM, Chilton or Haynes to follow the circuit thru the connectors untill you find the failure. For a quick effort, check the electrical connectors at the transfer case.

Good luck,

:)>-
