If I understand you're problem correct the looseness is coming from the slip joint, if this is the case you need to take the driveshaft to a drivetrain shop and have it replaced. About $100, and make sure they put a greese fitting in it.

You can have the driveline splines recoated to take out the slop.

It seems odd but I did this to mine years ago and its still good running 38's.

Does the clunk also sound when you put it in Reverse?

Could be the gears are worn out in the axles. Or does it clunk just putting it in 4x4 not moving?

as dumb as it sounds, check to see if all of you driveshaft bolts are tight. knew a guy with a ranger and he thought that he needed new u joints but it was really the bolts between the pumpkin and the driveshaft coming loose.
