I just finished installing a 351W and when I switch into reverse or soetimes stop at a light the truck stalls. I'm being told that I need a stall convertor to fix the problem. Can somebody expain to me how a stall convertor helps and point me in the direction for where to get one. I belive the tranny is original with some minor work done over the years. Also, the Holley carb was only a 570 CFM with electric choke and I just bought a Edelbrock 750 CFM with electric choke which I'll install next week.

Hey Tommy,

Welcome.

"stall" is a product of design of the torque convertor, and is the engine speed (in RPMs) that the convertor has a vicous lock. It has nothing to do with your engine stalling. Assuming that your old engine did not continously stall while the truck was not moving. Your problem should be solved by checking all of your engine adjustments.

start with checking for vacuum leaks, then timing, then idle mixture, choke settings, fast idle speed, then idle speed. Remember other than choke settings and fast idle, all other adjustments should be done with the engine at opperating temperature. Your problem may be solved by simply raising idle speed slightly.

Good Luck

What Ron said, and when you get to the hot idle set it at around 1200 RPM in Park. Then put it in gear, if it stalls bump it up a 1/4 turn at a time till it doesn't. If it doesn't stall then bump it down 1/4 turn at a time till it stalls and then up 1/2 turn. Run it on the road and see how it reacts. If it feels like it might stall, bump it up another 1/4 at a time till you are comfortable with the feel.

Check the information on the left side of the radiator sticker.

Good luck,

That 750 carb is over sized for the engine unless you do some other modifications that will have it drawing more. If you aren't increasing the displacement you would be better off with a re-manufactured stock 4180 or a 4160. The difference between the 4160 and 4180 is mainly that the bowl vents don't exist on a 4160. A stock carb can supply all the air that a stock 351 can draw. At first you may seem to get better performance out of the 750 but that is only because your old carb is worn out. On that engine a 570 will actually outperform the 750, if it is set up properly.

Good luck,
