I just bought a 66' Bronco with a aftermarket 351W engine. I got it home & noticed it was leaking oil from around the distributor & there seems to be a knock in the engine. I know very little about tearing in an engine but I'm not afraid to try. I've worked on other old beaters in the past but never had to dive into the motor....just replace little odds & ends.

Is there a recommended book or manual that you might suggest where I can get started?\

I also want to add power steering & power brakes at a later date. The brakes are terribly soft & I'm just not used that feeling.

Any pitfalls that I need to watch out for?

Thanks!!

Clay

Go to a good book store, most of them carey Ford engine rebuild books, there are several to choose from or get all they have. Look in the automotive book section or search Amazon.com for, "Ford engine rebuild". One I like is Small Block Ford engines by Tom Monroe. It covers all years and models. Cost is some where around $20.00.

an alternative is to buy a Long Block engine.

Good luck,

:)>-

I bought a couple of books off of Amazon as suggested. Wish me luck & I'll keep you guys posted on the progress.

The guy I bought it from put some work into it but I think with a little more help this thing will be a beast on & off the road.

"I've worked on other old beaters"

Hay.., be careful here..............

"..there seems to be a knock in the engine"

I've seen fuel pumps do this...(that would be lucky)

---or---

Piston slap is a knocking sound...& a single cyl. can be be repaired.....pull one plug wire off at a time, then re-install.

If noise goes away.., that's the bad cyl.

---or----

A bad wrist pin.., or rod bearing.., or a crank issue.

These can sometimes be fixed W/O removing eng. (unless serious, or "Bu-Cu" miles on eng.)

A lighter tone, higher speed clicking/clacking is usually a rocker arm..or maybe a faulty lifter...

Nice rig..!

BTW -- the manual brakes can be brought up to spec. & work great..! (they're horrible when neglected)

HTH,

B
