Yup, as Yardape said it'll need a new fuel system. You can certainly *try* putting a fuel regulator on there to cut the pressure down to something a carb will handle but then you'll be back asking why it doesn't run well and why you're having carb problems. Fact is that it just doesn't work well which is why everyone recommends re-doing the fuel system to something designed/suitable for a carb.
What you need to do is remove the stock pump (or pumps depending on the year) and run either a mechanical pump or a low pressure electric to feed the carb. Even the factory low-pressure pump in the 87-88' fuel tank doesn't work well and disconnecting it isn't an option because any other pump you install will have the extra problem of trying to pull fuel thru the dead pump. The best option is to remove everything that's there and use either a mechanical pump off the engine or a LP electric. Trying to step the pressure down with a regulator never works well or for long, if it did you'd see a *lot* more guys doing it. You really need to match your fuel supply to your system of fuel delivery. Nobody's ever happy with a half-a$$ed job, if you don't do it right you're never going to be happy with it.
