the bronco i recently purchased has a 302 that is pretty weak and im sure needs a rebuild. but for the price im going to pay to get this motor built i was wandering if it would be possible to upgrade to a 351 which would give me more options on other tranny transfer combinations without having to spend fifteen hundred just to have a nv3550.

does anyone else have any experience with this conversion

It depends the 351windsor has the c4 housing, but the Cleavland and the M code has a c6 385 series housing, which is fords version of the big block

"...if i go with a 351 would it give me any other tranny options"

Sorry.., we got side-tracked..... ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I guess the short answer is "YES" if you wanted to go with an automatic....as the 351 has a bit more "umph" to run the A/T

With a stick... it doesn't much matter.

You haven't said.., where you are.., & what you intend to do with your rig.

"....tranny transfer combinations without having to spend fifteen hundred..."

$1,500 would be cheap... would think it costs a bit more for what you're attempting. $-)

Drivelines, tunnel/floor supports, crossmembers usually need alteration, etc.

Unless you intend to "ROCK-IT" ...IMHO... I would freshen up the eng. trannie, & transfer as needed & be $$$$ ahead.

"...302 that is pretty weak and im sure needs a rebuild"

And you know this because......?? :-B

i bought the bronco because i had wanted one as my first vehicle but opted for a 79 scout. im located in north alabama, florence area, recently due to my job and the long drive i make daily i traded in the truck on a new car that gets 30 mpg instead of fourteen and now with the gas money i have been saving and a increase of pay we bought the bronco to restore it (somewhat) but still have vehicle we can run around the farm in and get back into trail rides again (mild trails) what im going for is a clean rig that is put together well.

as far as the motor goes im sure i could change the plugs and wires, get a more up to date carb and it would have a little more uumph but im not sure it would push 35s like im going for. and the three speed winds out pretty quickly but isnt low enough to creep around especially with 35s i considered changing gear ratio but that will further affect the problem of going through the gears and winding out so rapidly, i mean dont get me wrong im not looking to run seventy down the highway but fifty five would be nice.

that is also leading me to trying to find a better tranny transfer combo not to mention the transfer case now that i have it pulled has quite a bit of metal debri in the casing(not small pieces but large shavings) so either way the transfer case has to be replaced or rebuilt.

one way or another im going to do what needs to be done to get it right. i would love to have some insight on what i should do, im not familiar with the bronco running gear. other than the dana 44 front which is going to have to be gone through as well the hubs are stuck locked which will have to be replaced when i do the disc brake conversion when the time somes. im just trying to get a jump on this and not get burned out to fast

Ask this in another post but here it is again.

So going the other way. I have access to a free 89 302 out of a van that only has 110,000 miles on it and runs like new. What would be involved in replacing my 351W with that engine? Don't know if I'll be happy with the smaller engine but I can't beat the price.

Thanks

Mike

IMHO.., the 302 is a bit anemic for your full size Br. with A/T. Adding over 100K mi. on eng. & one would think you'd be on the down-hill side. Mileage may even drop.

GREAT POST..!

Again.., IMHO Your eng. is strong enough (proper tests, & tuned.) Your pres. carb will easily do the job.

The 44 is plenty strong & prob. just need hubs cleaned, greased, serviced. Ford 9" in rear (what they use in "dragsters")

Sounds like you already have lower gears than 411's (do the test)

Your trans./transfer is a great unit after service.

Were your tests in 4 wheel...hi & low range...?

I have 100 hp I-6 32's 456's & a Dana-30.....I can grab air at the top of a flat-top hill ...usually 2nd gear...sometimes 3rd.

(4 low of course)

The Br. isn't any diff. than most any 20-30-40 yr. old veh. They're tough "old school" tried-n-true equipment.

There's a lot of Br's out there re-engineered...trannys & such.., FOR-SALE ...& usually a reason for that.

Hoping someone else has an opinion..... >
