Need some help...I have a roller 306 that I am now ready to install in place of my tired 289. What do I need to look out for? The new engine was mated to a stick and I would like to use my current three speed trans thats in the Bronco. What should I look for in this swap? Balancer swap? Flywheel issues?Radiator?

Its been a while since I could use the old Bronco and I am trying to gather everything before I tear into this swap.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

My Bronco is a 1966 half cab, original 289/three speed thats been in the family since new. The newer engine is a later model sbf that has a carb.

what year is the new block? yes you may need a new flywheel (it should match the imbalance of the motor (28oz or 50oz) but have the tooth count for the tranny= 164t), fab a clutch pivot brkt,

if you're using the brkts off of the 289, the front of the motor should be ok, check the waterpump fitment also, you may need to use the t-chain cover too. The heads could have bolt size issues...list what you plan on using and I'll let ya know..

If the engine still has the serpentine setup the water pump will spin the wrong way. As stated you will need a flexplate off an 83 or newer 302. You should be able to use the motor mounts off the 289, they should be the clam shell style, the 302 unless already swapped over will have the newer style motor mounts which I call the 5 liter style. The 302 (I am assuming its a newer block) will have the dipstick in the block where the 289 will have it in the timing chain cover.
