My 1989 xlt 5.0l will not start. It ran fine but now will not start. Tried getting codes but they will not diplay. I noticed when I turn the key on the fuel pump starts and does not stop. Before it ran for a few seconds and then stopped. Does this have anything to do with it not starting?

I think we need some more information here. Prior to the bronco not starting, did you do any repairs or replacements on anything? How old is fuel pump? Is the engine turning over at all when you crank it? Are lights, etc. working? We'll go from there.

I recently Replaced the ignition module on the distributor and installed a new coil. It ran for one day and now won't start. I took the ignition module and had it tested, they said it was good. The engine turns over and I do have spark. The fuel pump is original 190,000 miles.

If the relay was bad, would he still hear the fuel pump making it's racket?

If it's getting a good spark, I'd have to think that for some reason fuel is not being delivered. I don't know enough about FI to be able to give much suggestion on that...

Somebody mention in my thread the other week about a fuel regulator perhaps being the problem for mine when it would die and not restart until a little waiting game.

I wouldnt think a bad fuel line because you'd certainly smell gas with the pump pumping. Maybe if yours has a low pressure pump in the tank if could be out. That would make the front (high pressure) pump run continuously due to it's never getting the fuel and pressuring up the system.

I'm thinking the fuel pump is your problem, but ask around. It's got to be a fuel delivery problem of some type. Good luck.

You should have two pumps....an in line and one in the tank, check'em both. Before that, check your inertia shut off. This is designed to shut off fuel in the event of an accident. Also you could ckeck your fuel pressure regulator.

Wouldnt the inertia switch keep the pump from getting power though? I guess it's not a bad idea to check it anyway just in case you're hearing something that is NOT the pump...

To check the fuel pressure regulator (which is on the fuel rail towards the firewall on the drivers side) you just check the pressure on the fuel line. It's got a valve just in front of the pressure regulator on the driver side. You will need a proper gauge to do it. Ask your local parts store if you can borrow one.

The fuel pressure regulator is held on by three allen head screws that come up through the bottom of the regulator. It takes patience to remove them. There should be some pressure build-up in the line, so make sure you protect your eyes and keep all flames/sparks etc. away :-B .

How long does the pump (or whatever is making the noise) run when you turn the key to the on position?

I installed a new preassure regulator (patience is an under statement) I have 40lbs of preassure at the check valve. The fuel pump runs as long as i have the key on. It should shut off after a few seconds. I am thinking it is something electrical that is not telling the pump to shut off. I am going to try a new relay and see what that does.
