Hey everybody, I've been working on my 86 bronco the past few days. Its old enough that emissions don't matter anymore so I've been trying to get rid of tons of vacuum lines anywhere I can. Anyways I replaced the stock Holley 4180 with a 600CFM double pumper, replaced the stock coil with an MSD Blaster, and the stock ignition box with an MSD 6A box, and now the car idles at around 3000 and refuses to drop. Does anyone know whats going on here? I've tried adjusting the carb every which way, and no dice. Some vaccuum lines aren't hooked up (just plugged for now). What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!

turn out the idle ***** . also check that you do have vacuum running where it is needed.

The idle ***** is all the way out, must be a big vacuum leak somewhere. When I have the car on and pump the brakes the idle will shoot up 500 RPM or so then drop back down after I stop. Where do I absolutely need vacuum? Assuming I delete the EGR and whatnot, all I can think of is distributor advance and brake booster. I'll be running mini filters out of the valve covers instead of running the vacuum PCV valves.

sounds like air is bypassing your carb completely, did you change the intake too? check your carb gasket also. and you need the pvc valve hooked up to clear top end pressure. if you don't then it could reek havoc in your valves and oiling system, just leaving them open to vent isn't good enough. there should also be a carb vacuum diagram that came with the new carb that tells you have to hook it up properly because some carbs use vacuum to regulate air/ fuel draw. (vacuum secondaries)

It's a double pumper on there right now so I pretty much plugged up most of the other vacuums. I got it to idle just fine, it turns out that the manifold had a little vacuum operated switch for the choke pull off sticking out of it and would move forward and lock the throttle in place to make the engine spin 3000 RPM. Once I finish deleting the EGR I'll post some pictures in case anyone else wants to do something similar. It's running a C6 transmission and after the install of the new carb it does not want to shift into 3rd. I am running the vacuum for the modulator straight off the manifold, and the kickdown lever is installed, albeit needs adjustment. Would the kickdown lever cause the trans not to shift?

yeah if the kickdown was pushed back too far for whatever reason it'll think you're on the throttle all the time and keep it from shifting into 3rd until about 4000 rpm.
