Ok guys I have an issue hopefully you can help. Heres the scenario; Truck is a 1980 300-6 4spd. I just putt a new clutch kit in it, with a new flywheel about a week ago to get it ready for winter. Truck was running great last friday. Parked it when I got home friday afternoon and haven't touched it till this morning. Got in it this morning pumped the pedal 4-5 times (28 degrees outside) turned the key and she fired right up. Let her run for about 5-10 mins to warm up while I scraped the ice off the windshield. Jumped in pulled the e-brake and off to work I went. Got about 1 a mile from the house and the trucl just shut down, the lights were still bright radio was still working just the engine stopped running I pumped the clutch to jump start it and no luck rolled into the convience store parking lot. When I came to a stop I tryed to start it, it started right up but dies imediatly, when you pump the pedal it's like it's not connected to the carb nothing. Then tryed to start it again same thing, won't stay running. I popped the hood and everything looked normal! I tryed it again it started right up but still died right after, gas pedal seems to be doing nothing! tryed, tryed, tryed, and finally she stayed running, idling just fine. I let her run for about 5 minutes revving it up and letting it idle, thought it was a cold start issue cuase now it's running fine. Shut the hood and proceeded to work wel;l about 2 miles away on the freeway going 60 in fourth gear it died, I turned the key to bump it and floor the gas it went for a second but died again! Well being stuck on the freeway at 5:30am in 28 degree weather was not to appealing so I just turned the key forward in the start position and held it there with my foot giving it gas the whole way, about 3 mins down the road was my exit so I exited and as soon as I was not holding the key forward it died barely made it into a parking lot across the street from my work. As soon as I stopped the truck I tryed to start it and now the starter just whines it doesn't turn the engine over! I figured when I was forcing it with the key in the start positing for so long I was going to burn the starter up but didn't ven think about the new flywheel I was screwing up I just had installed a week earlier! (dumb) oh well hope I just ate up the starter wheel and not the flywheel. Going to replace the starter after work and go from there. Hope that flywheel is ok. Does this truck use a electronic choke and what other cold start fucntions might be cuasing this isuue. Truck runs great as soon as you start it but wont stay running longer than 5 seconds though. Please help need my winter rig running asap.

Well got off work and went and got a new starter. Got the starter in and got the truck turning over again but now it won't even start. I replaced the cap and rotor, put in a new fuel filter and still no luck!

Tomorrow going to get a new ignition coil and install the smog pump belt it's been missing since i got the truck and the guy at the autoparts store said that it should have the belt to help with vacum operated carb functions. I told him what? Never heard that before and the truck was running fine for the last three months without it! Oh well kinda at a loss here. I know more about fuel injected cars than old carby's. Theres a sensor on the water neck I am assuming that it is the cold start valve that shuts the choke off in cold start situations. I think I may have a choke problem. Somone please help. I hope it's just as simple as the coil but if that doesn't work then I think I will but a new distibutor and carburetor, replace all the vacum lines and put in a new thermostat. Guess i might as well change the plugs and wires too. I figure after all that the damn thing beter run like a champ.

One more quick question the starter solenoid was mounted on the firewall kinda lossly when i got the truck and i had issues with the truck not turning over becuase of a bad ground, sometimes it would throw sparks! I since then have repositioned it on the firewall with a good ground. Is it possible that the starter solenoid having a bad connection would fry the alternator? Oh well I didn't pay much for the truck and i'm sure it needed a few tune up parts anyway.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well guys still no luck! I have figured out the problem just having a real hard time finding the right replacement part. I have allready ordered 2 different parts they were wrong though!

The truck will start and run just fine for about 30 seconds after sitting for a few hours. It's the Ignition Control Module, I have allready bought 2 different ones and still no luck! The one I need is Motorcraft part # D9VF-101316-AB it has one plug coming off the module and a femaale rectangular socket for the blue male wire plug on the engine harness. The ones they keep giving me at the parts house has 2 plugs coming out both round one with 4-5 wires and the other with 2. I finally took the damn part offf this morning and am taking it to ford dealership to hopefully get the right replacement part. This really sucks! I'd pay whatever they wanted for the right part just can't figure out which one it is. Somone here has had to have had the same problem, as the guy at the dealership told me the early model 80's broncos and pickups were notorious for bad ignition control modules. I will take some pics of the part tonight and post them.

I am at my witts end. I want my truck back and running. If I would have took it to somone they would have had a really hard time trying to figure all this out I am sure. Glas the people where it's parked are understanding and letting me keep her there till i get the right part. I am so fed up with all this, it's a real kick in the nuts that it starts and runs fine first crank after a few hours but only for 30 seconds or so! I swear I am going to go bald after pulling my hair out trying to get the right damn part.

Please help! This is my third post and still no response! Somone please chime in here, anything is better than nothing. I know I am new here but that shouldn't be a reason not to get help!

SO FRUSTRATED! PLEASE HELP FOR THE THIRD TIME!

I had a similar experience with my 81 F150 with a 302 and my 85 F250 with a 460 and both times it was the ignition module. Installed a replacement and it worked fine. I am assuming you have the duraspark ignition in it and you have the fender mounted module. I now carry a spare module for just these occasions as well as a large compliment of parts for other problem areas for Fords. Sorry you have not had any posts, this is the first time I saw this for some reason. Hope it works for you..

Wanna hear something funny? I just tried to go home from work and low and behold, my Bronco will not start..... It has fuel, no spark. I have power to the coil so it is either my new MSD coil or the distributor mounted module. And remember that I just said I keep one with me just for times like this??? "I now carry a spare module for just these occasions as well as a large compliment of parts for other problem areas for Fords" Yeah, well I forgot that i used my Bronco to move stome stuff for my wifes work and did not put that bag or my tool bag back in after I was done. So my extra parts and the special tool that I need to change the module are sitting safe and warm in my garage 20 miles away..... Kind of ironic dont you think???

It's fixed!!!!!!!!

The culprit was a bad connection on the ignition control module. Not the plugs coming from the module but the ones right after that, that hook into the harness going into the firewall.

Thanks so much for your replies "2ndtour89"! I appreciate it. For future reference I got a replacement at carquest for $36.00. I was confused with right and left side of the truck, is it left and right from the drivers seat or left and right standing in front of the truck! OOPS!!! Feel like a complete idiot now! Well I was looking at the wrong damn box the whole time. I was looking at the regulator on the fender right behind the battery, wrong, it was on the drivers side wheel well! Man do i feel stupid. Replaced it and the truck runs and drives great now.

GOT MY WINTER RIG BACK NOW! Couldn't have happened at a better time, started to snow real hard this afternoon here.

Well thanks again for your help and I think I will go pick up an extra module since they are fairly cheap and easy to replace. So glad to have it back up and running!

You guys have a great winter and holiday season!

Have you changed the pick up coil in the distributor? That is a symptom of the pickup coil failing as it gets warm or hot. Sounds like you have tried most everything else. I use to carry one of those with me at all times, just for that reason.

Good luck,

:)>-
