scan0006.jpgI have just purchased a 1972 Bronco...and like most newbies I have alot of questions and guidance needed....first off...the wife wants to upgrade the rear seat with something a bit safer for our girls 12 and 7. I don't complain about this cause I love my girls....and I have my Bronco now ...so If all the wise people out here can help me...is there a seat out there that can be converted that has a highr back and fits with the Bronco look?

I will attach a pic of my new toy...hopefully I do it right

I have young ones too and unless there's a full cage to the back, I mean a real one properly attached to the frame, mine arent going there. (Maybe this comes from previously owning built samazukis) Assuming I do the cage thing, theres alot of options for fixed three point belts(schroth is one) that could be attached to the cage. the seats in a suzuki sam are amazingly narrow, although the only ones decent are the "jx" seats. They might fit. :)>-

With your seats I would say get a mid to late 80's Mitsubishi Montero or Dodge Raider back seat. The are within an inch or so and are pretty easily adaptable. I saw an EB with one in it and it looked really good. If it weren't for the fact that I have a freshly recovered back seat, I would do it. They are pretty comfortable and even fold forward to give you storage space.

Not sure if the back is tall enough for your needs, but a J**p TJ (Wrangler)

flip and fold rear seat fits pefectly between the wheel wells of an EB.

Thats a nice shinny lookin Bronco! You can add buckets in the rear side by side. You definately need the famile style cage in the rear attached to the frame. As stated above, attach the seatbelts to the cage but make sure the seats are as well. If the seat are connected to the floor and the belts to the cage you might get torn in half if not connected to the frame...

Thanks for All the input...I have been looking for a new Roll Bar to up grade the protection...and was just today wondering around a salvage yard looking and measuring seats...several possibilites are out there. I do have a question on the Roll Bar ...is there one that combines function and form?

I like the look of the four point, This will not be ( I am sure to some folks dismay)used much for off roading...it's a mall cruiser.... :-& #036;

With this in mind do any of the opinions concerning Roll Bars change?

Thanks for the Help

If you arent going to use it much off road except for maybe a few daily excursions, then the 4 point is ok, if you dont take the hard top off. Remember that a 4 point is only a hoop behind the drivers seat and usually mounted to the fender wells. If you plan on running anything more than a #5 rated trail, I would highly recommend a 6 point cage and be done with it. The cost for finding an original 4 point or a SmittyBuilt 4 pointer is going to be in the same neighborhood as if you just went ahead and bought the 6 point from a decent company anyway. For that matter, if you or a buddy can weld, buy the tubing and build it yourself. The material will cost less than $100 to do it.

As far as form and function, what are you looking for as far as function? Are you looking to integrate shoulder belts into it for the front & rear seats? Are you looking for a rear seat mount? There are quite a few different cages out there that do all of these but there are others that go overboard as well.

I am looking top install 3 point seatbelts front and rear. It looks to me that I can build any framing needed for rear seats useing the original rear seat mounting points. As far as the trail driving it will not be in this Bronco. If I get the bug for that then I will get something that when I turn it over...which I am sure most do at some point...I won't be sick.

The front belts are simple I can use the existing bar as mounting points easily. Its the Rear that is a challenge. What if I use the factory mounting point for the seats and seat belts in the rear, with some creativity for the upper point on the shoulder, possibly to the seat itself or inner 1/4's with a large anchor plate to disperse any impact pressure. It seems to me that this would work just fine, with an off road restricted Bronco. But then again I am not the expert.

Thanks for the comments and help

DMichael5,I really dont like the stock rear, because of the sharp metal edges sticking out everywhere for the kids to get hurt with.I havent seen a high back, but there are a couple of fold and tumble rears that are way nice.Wild horses has a nice one...but the one I like I think its at Tom,s bronco parts,The main difference is that the one at Toms appears to have more pads at the sides that seam to go up against the fenderwells, unless its an optical illusion other than that they seam real padded, also Mastercraft makes a nice one too,but it doesnt fold out of the way.Mines available ,a stock biege in mint condition but I dont recomend it for the kids sake.If you did want it,Im always willing to horse trade for something.BANDIT...awesome ...73

Bandit,

Thanks for the input...I have seen the flip and fold seats on line also. I agree that the one looks "more Padded" and I do like the way it extends out over the rear wheelhouses. I took a walk with a tape measure through a salvage yard the other day...and may have found what I was looking for. Looked at a Lumina APV van. IT has modular style buckets in the back that will fit sided by side in the back, as well as front buckets that I can use with minor ( I hope) modifications and lower the front buckets so I am not looking at the top of the windshield header. If I can find the right color , Black, then all I have to do is order the new carpet install the seat belts and the matching four seats...ta da... brand new interior and it should be less than 400.00

Well thats the way I am leaning at this point.

thanks again
