Hello.  I currently drive a 1993 F-150, but am about to move to California, and planning on selling the F-150 before I go, and purchasing a Bronco in California.  I want to get one with the 4.9L inline-6 and a manual transmission.

My question is, what year did this motor get fuel injection in California?  If possible, I would like to get a Bronco that has both a 4-speed manual transmission (NP435 or T-18) *and* a fuel-injected 4.9L inline-6.

Thanks,

-Chris P

Yo Chris,

Welcome to the Zone!

Here we go;

"1987 was another big year for Bronco upgrades. The body was restyled and featured a more aerodynamic look and Euro-style headlamps. The transfer case was swapped for the smoother-shifting Borg Warner 1356 with 2.69:1 low range and a 4.10:1 gear option was added. An optional Touch Drive electric shift for the transfer case was available for Broncos equipped with the 302 MPI motor and AOD transmission. The standard motor was still the 300 cid I-6-cylinder. However the straight six now came with MPI fuel injection. This increased the horsepower of the six cylinder from 125 at 3,200rpm to 145 at 1,800rpm. The torque was increased from 150 foot pounds at 3,400rpm to 265 at 2,000rpm. The 351 cid H.O. motor was still offered as an option. 1987 also was the year the rear anti-lock brakes were standardized and a new MPH/KPH speedometer was introduced."

"1987:Ford introduced smoother more aerodynamic body styling. New aerodynamic, impact-resistant headlights with easy-to-install halogen bulbs replaced the old inset sealed beam style. The interior was also redesigned for a more streamlined appearance. Standard equipment now included rear wheel anti-lock braking system, power steering and power brakes. The 4.9L and 5.0L engines now had Electronic Fuel Injection and serpentine drive belts. The Eddie Bauer Trim package was offered and a 4,000 lb. chrome step bumper became standard.

1988:Electronic Fuel Injection and serpentine drive belts became standard for all engines. Manual transmissions were now 5-speed."

Thanks for that information.  Is it possible that California 4.9L Broncos got fuel injection before the rest of the country (so in '86 or earlier)?  That would put them in the typical range of the 4-speed manuals.

Edit:  I see one of the links you posted stresses differences of California models, but does not list a fuel injected inline-6 before 1987.  However, I still remember coming across information that suggested '86 4.9L trucks had fuel injection in California.  I will keep searching for some concrete answer.

Broncos with MAP sensors are Batch fire injector systems while those with MAF sensors are sequential injector systems. Broncos with California spec emissions were the first ones to get MAF systems. I just don't know how easily you will find a Bronco with the secs your looking for. Best of luck on your hunt and show us photos of the ones you do find.
