I’m referring to fuel injected motors only, and assuming both have same maintenance history, which one would get better, or would they be about the same?

My experience is both peak at 13mpg CITY with the Ford EFI.

My 1989 had the 302 and my 91 has the 351. Before my 302 blow a piston ring it got 13mpg no issue. To me the 351 is more of a truck engine, slow to rev but makes torque. The 302 is rev happy and a will still make enough torque to tow a heavy trailer with out any issues. Neither engine makes power past 4200rpm unless you change out the valve springs. The 302 is also lighter but a 100lbs or so.

Early 90's I worked at a Ford dealership. The 351 typically got 1 to 2 mpg less than the 302. As Bronco **** stated the 302 gets about 13 mpg. The 351 makes more torque. The 302 had a smoother idle as well.
