Hello Folks,

I just recently traded my  FZ1 for a 1996 Bronco XLT 5.0  - I have always wanted one and the opportunity presented itself right before I was deployed.

My intention is to remove all of the interior and Line-X the entire cab, 6 or 4" lift, and rebuild the motor and trans - As well as they necessary body work to remove the rust!

I come to you today with many questions!

I plan on having the stock 5.0 and trans rebuilt  - they both run well but have 200k on both. This will be around $4500, is there a better route for that price?

I am not going to wheel and would like it to be a nice driving pavement queen - mainly to the beach or ski trips. Would a 4" lift suit me better? I will be running a less aggressive tread pattern and probably stay with 33's. - Keep my current rims or get a deeper offset?

The problem areas are mainly in the rear, superficial rust on the bottom of the doors and roof, rear quarters, and some good cancer on the rear deck and wheel wells.

Lastly, what are some "Must Do's" on this truck while it's in metamorphosis?

Thanks!

Hey MPD, welcome,

Just my opinions:

$4500 for professional engine and tranny rebuilds is pretty good.

If you are using her primarily for road/ highway use, Do Not Lift her.   I used The Beast for daily highway driving and with 33s it was very smooth and comfortable.

I did switch to 17" rims and Nexen Rodians and loved the ride.  Save the money for something else.

Replace all the flexible brake lines.  They are often forgotten when servicing the brakes.

See eastwood for rust removal and protection. Here's a link.  http://www.eastwood.com/rust-protection-done-right

Finally ...Thank You  for your service.

   Good Luck and enjoy

Thank you gentlemen!

This will align great with my Afghan cabin fever - I have a ton of options it seems.

The vehicle was picked up today for the body shop.  I had a friend get the VIN and additional pics of the drive train because I did not have time to research what axles, transfer case, and tranny that came on this Bronco as well as the front end.

I have attached a few more pic's - I will run the VIN but does anything stand out as to what diff's, transfer case, and tranny I have. Additionally, do I have the TTB front end or do all last gen Bronco's have that?

I usually would be able to research all of this but everything is out of site and out of mind over here!

Thank you for the incite.

To learn more about what diffs and axles you have look for the tag bolted to the covers of the diff and on the back of the transfer case. (if they are still attached.)

this post for examle of what your looking for: http://broncozone.com/topic/13379-gears-and-axle-code/?do=findComment&comment=89950

From Your Vin It looks like,

1FM — Ford Motor Company, USA, multi-purpose vehicle (1 = USA) (F = Ford) (M = MultiPurpose Vehicle)

E — 6,001-7,000 Pounds

U - wagon body fullsize light truck

1 - 1/2 ton light truck

5 - 4WD (because U1 is infront of the 5)

N — ('86-02) 302ci/5.0L EFI

6 - Factory Check Digit 6

T - 1996 model year

L - Michigan Truck (Wayne, Michigan)

B32120 — Veh. # (132,119)

Other info:

PS = Pacific Green paint Body

TS = Silver Frost as 2nd tone

WB (105) = XLT

Tr (E) = E40D transmission

Axle code ( 19 ) is a Ford conventional ( non Ford Traction Lok / limited slip ) axle with a 3.55 ratio

Thats about all I can read off the tag.

Yo,

Here is some more info for you.  If tge hot links won't workmsee them in my response @ http://broncozone.com/topic/22440-drivetrain-identification/

Many owner/shops may have swapped components since new.
I made a mistake many years ago by telling someone to use the Driver's side label to ID their Rear Differential (axle, pumpkin type, etc.); turned out that a previous owner had swapped a Dana 60 in place of the stock 8.8
so... a run down;

DIFFERENTIAL:
8.8 Cover Gasket Depiction
Information, History, ID, pics, etc.; "...8.8” rear’s have a ten bolt inspection plate on the back that’s about 10” from the center of the top bolt to the bottom bolt center. The 8.8” first saw service in the 79 Crown Vic. and in 1980 for the F100/150..."

But the Dana 60 does not have provions for the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) NOR the internal tone ring. So no ability to provide a 72,900 to 86,900 pulses per mile signal via the 4WABS module to the Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module (PSOM); PSOM converts this signal to 8,000 pulses per mile. That signal is sent out to the PCM and then to:

The front axle identification tag is a bar code label on the rear facing surface of the axle support arm, passenger side on Bronco, F-150 and F-250 4x4. For F-350, the label is located on the axle tube.

Rear axles (8.8 have a metal tag secured under adjacent axle housing cover bolt heads listing Ford and Dana part numbers and the ratio. Front drive axles have a similar tag.
http://www.diesel-da...ages/e6469e.gif
Ford Axle Identification Tag

The plant code on the axle identification tag is to be used as the official service identifier.
The plant code for an axle denotes a particular design and specific ratio, and if it is a conventional or limited slip type. In addition, the plant code will not change as long as that particular axle assembly never undergoes an external design change. If, however, an internal design change takes place during the production life of the axle and that internal change affects service parts interchangeability, a dash and numerical suffix will be added to the plant code.
http://www.diesel-da...ages/e6470e.gif
Note that plant codes in the illustrations are identical, but the tag below shows a numeric. This means that as an assembly both axles are interchangeable; however, internally they are different. Therefore, each would require different internal service parts at service time.
...

Axle Codes, Bronco, Rear from 85 & 90 Owner's Manuals; here's the combined codes from 85 and 90 Bronco owner's manuals; this should cover most if not all codes out there: REGULAR: (Regular means "open" diff in this context) 13 4.11 14 3.00 16 3.50 18 3.08 19 3.55 LIMITED SLIP: H3 4.11 H4 3.00 H5 4.10 H6 3.50 H8 3.08 H9 3.55 If you have 3 digits on your axle code the first two digits are the rear axle code. Thus, looking at my pics above and cross-referencing the chart above my '90 came from the factory w/3.55's and Ford's sorry excuse for a limited slip differential, the Crap-Lok, er I mean Trak-Lok. Now, to know if the front diff is open or limited slip I'm ass-uming you have to look for a tag on the diff, as there is no "front axle code" on the door jamb sticker..." Miesk5 Note, I'll add that the axle code for some years (Maybe all) adds a 2 after the limited slip code if the front is also limited slip. So the code "H9" is a 3.55:1 limited slip rear axle only. "H92" would be a 3.55:1 limited slip on both axles. by ElKabong (Ken, El Kabong)

Gear Ratio Determination; "...remove the differential cover or the 3rd member and count the number of teeth on the gears. Unfortunately, this can get messy. One somewhat easy yet very reliable way is to jack up the wheels, disconnect the driveshaft, rotate one wheel, and count how many revolutions the pinion yoke/****** makes. If you turn one tire & the other one either stays still while the pinion rotates, or the other one rotates backward while the pinion stays still, or something in between, then you've got an open diff or a very weak LSD (like a Trac-Lok with too many miles on it). In this case, you need to secure one wheel (perhaps by lowering the tire onto the ground), then you can figure your gear ratio by rotating the airborne tire TWO full rotations and counting the number of times the pinion rotates. 3.73 turns means 3.73 gears. If you only rotate the tire once, then 1.865 turns means 3.73 gears. If you turn one tire & the other one turns the same number of turns in the same direction, then you've got a good LSD or locker. In this case, you can just rotate the tires ONE full rotation and figure your gear ratio by counting the number of times your pinion rotates. 3.73 turns means 3.73 gears..." Read More

You can measure the transmission fluid pan to determine which transmission you have if identification information is not available. A 4R70W transmission pan has an overall length of just under 15 inches, while an E4OD pan is much larger, measuring about 20 inches in overall length.-
