I'm finally getting around to updating my Bronco's powertrain/drivetrain.  I'm ordering a crate 351 for it, I have an AOD and an NP205 for it.  I originally wanted to go with a zf, but the only donors I could find were to nice for me to gut (sorry I like those trucks to much to butcher if they aren't ruined already).  I'm curious why so many use the stock transfer case on the Bronco?  It seems this would cost more money to get the same result getting the adapters to make this happen?  Also Would the stock transfer case shifter and linkage work for the NP205?  Looking forward to hearing from all of you guys who have done this before.  I'm excited to finally have the time to do this.

Hi Crobson..,

Not clear what you're asking..?

"I'm curious why so many use the stock transfer case on the Bronco?"

The stock (up to spec) Dana 20 T-case is a pretty stout unit.

It seems this would cost more money to get the same result getting the adapters to make this happen?

HUH..?  This (above) is what you do to install an AOD  & a 205 (Cross member, etc.)

Also, Would the stock transfer case shifter and linkage work for the NP205?

Really don't think so.

Check me on all this & I hope someone on this board has the exact info. you're look'n for.

I can't help as I've not done any of these mods.

Good luck,

B

I'm building the cross member, I thought there was an adapter required to attach the Dana 20 to an aod? And the linkage isn't a big deal just a curiosity. This won't happen over night, but in a few months I hope to have it in place and running.

So slight change in plans, I picked up my np205 today and grab an old 302 the guy had for valve covers etc that I'll need on the create motor. Then my dad calls me and informs me he his friend is letting me get his good running mid 80s bronco for a few hundred (body isn't in the best shape). So going to use it's drivetrain (302 AOD) instead of a crate motor. This will give me more flexibility on unexpected cost for the swap. On the pictures..., I'll try but this poor old phone hasn't been doing pictures well lately.

So just thought of another question related to this and searching seems to be failing me.  My bronco body isn't in the best of shape and a previous owner removed the speedometer.  Is there an aftermarket option I can use with the AOD?  My search seems to find cables, but not speedos. Doesn't need to fit in the factory location as that will all be changed eventually.

Where RU..?

Your info pages should be filled in by now.

Check Toms Br Parts, Wild horses 4x4 & Jeffs Br Graveyard.  Believe they all have the up-dated speedo(s)

(several styles & prices) and, they do fit the stock dash.

I'm in South West GA

I'll get to that, I tend to forget things like that.

The issue with those speedos for me ( I think I have looked at them all) is they are outrageous in price for a Bronco that is in this one's Shape. (one day I will rectify that issue)

I will dig deeper on it, I really didn't want the original gauge as I was planning on a smooth over lay for my dash and setting mine up the way I wanted them.

OK I have new question.  I seem to have over looked I might have problems with the oil pan.  If I were to put a 2.5 to 3.5 inch suspension lift on the bronco would that allow me to clear a standard oil pan or do I still need to get the factory style early bronco pan?  I ask because it's already getting a suspension lift it just wasn't going to get it right now.  If it will clear it with the suspension lift that would be my preferred route.   Either way looks like I need to order more parts as soon as I can.  Also if this helps, where I live it will be used for occasional mud bogging and woods riding no rock crawling or anything like that.

Were some FSB's 2 wheel drive..?  (I don't know)

Point being, you need a 4x4 pan. One reason, to be sure it clears the diff.

during suspension travel.., and second, for proper oil pickup.

If that's a 4x4 pan., you're good.

The donor is a mid 80's 4x4 bronco.  So this sounds good

Well my luck is great on this one.  I was thinking of the wrong Bronco that he had.  I'm getting a fuel injected 5.8.  Probably keeping it fuel injected.  The donor has a c6, but I'm going to put the AOD I have already sourced for it in.  What's a good budget option for a floor shifter for this?  I know I can rig something up, but just curious what others have tried and liked/disliked.

"Probably keeping it fuel injected"

Seems someone on this board converted away from "FI" & it was a "bowl of snakes".

So this may well be the way to go.

Also, doesn't the computer run/control/coordinate/synchronize these later engines/transmissions..?

May need more research...??

Summit Racing has several auto shifters.

I have a Ford Tech helping to the FE transplant so that area should be no real issue.  He is familiar with this part (he's been a Ford tech 30 years) I'm the one who isn't.  I was mainly wondering about shifters, but I'll take a look at Summit, thank you again.

So update on my project. I have the donor now and I have rebuilt the rear brakes and put new bearings in. Next is the front bearings and brakes. Then the real fun starts. Just wish I had more time to dedicate to it.

Good job..!!

B4 starting the brakes/bearings.., insp. the axle u-joints behind the knuckle. And, insp. the kingpins

by pull'n (jacked-up) on the tire at the bottom to see if they wobble. Have someone watch kingpin area

as a wobble could be the hub/bearings.

Point being.., if any of these units are bad., no sense in pull'n the brakes/hubs, etc. again to do at a later

date.

---------------- This thread was on "engine".  Ea. repair/question on a different project needs

a new thread started to avoid confusion.

When ready, start a new topic/thread on D-30 axles & brakes.

Thanks, we checked it all out on by putting it in a lift. I'm just doing what I can at home. Nothing actually looked bad except the brakes (they were missing parts). I'm just replacing all I can as I go.
