Hi everyone, so I have an 86' bronco for starters and as the title implies I'm having trouble with the steering column/shaft and I have no clue where to begin so any help would be really appreciated.

So the steering column works in the sense of the directions and If the wheel is in the down most position I cant just angle it up without using the column. However when it is angled up (as it needs to be for me to even get in) it takes no pressure at all and the wheel shaft falls down into the bottom most position without me needing to pull on the steering column.

Has anyone else had this issue and can point me in the right direction?

There is a spring loaded latch that locks the wheel in the selected tilt position.   The steering wheel will have to come off.   The latch is on the bottom of the column just below the wheel. The latch is operated by pushing the signal stalk forward.   I understand this latch can become bent, but I am not sure what problem is causing your symptoms.

Yo Marshall86B,

"If you remove the steering wheel you can see a latch rod that engages a piece that resembles a gears teeth when you move the turn signal lever. That rod gets bent if enough force is used when pulling down on the wheel. You can bend it back so it will hold. My son (320lbs) bends the rod in our 86 fairly often while wheeling. It's so bad right now the wheel comes down with just the weight of my arm. I suppose that eventually the rod will break & have to be replaced." by CS1986
