I have a 88 that wont start. It will not turn over at the ignition. I can jumo the posts to get it to start. This truck has had a early 80s 5.0 dropped in. So the engine isnt using any of the electronics it was designed for.i have replaced the coil, the tumbler, the igintion switch. Cannot find an in-line fuse at all. My manual says there shoukd be one. The streering column dosent seem to be the original. The truck has a 4 inch body lift. So im sure some redneck riggin has been done. I have only had the truck a month. Now my bell goes off constanly and my gear shift wont move out of park. Imma bout to splode. Any ideas or knowledge?

Yo Todd,

Welcome!

Do you have good battery voltage over 12.6 volts on red/light blue wire (circuit 32) on starter relay's small terminal (it is at top of the relay as shown in below pic) @ passenger side inner fender when turning key to start?

Is relay securely mounted to a Rust/Grime Less section of fender?

Some non-Ford Motorcraft relays are being reported as Defective

Since you can jump the relay posts to engage starter to spin at normal speed,(I assume), battery is ok as well as posts are OK and clean, clamps and cables including grounds are ok.

Look at Fusible link M, circuit 37 in Wiring diagram... provides battery power to ignition switch. It may be damaged.

Location pics in an 85 & 89 (between the starter relay and alternator)"...the first two pics are of an 89 5.0. because of the loom i wasnt able to trace the wires...The second pic is at the starter relay to show you a fusible link wire (the green wire in my fingers you can see at the eyelet there is a black plastic block). the third pic is of my 85. i think that big block is another style fusible link ford used on older stuff (but im not sure)..."

Yo,

I should have wrote that the start circuit does not use a fuse; the voltage cones from battery to ignition switch via fusible link M.

I BELIEVE M is attached to starter relay

See this diagram

1990-component-location-view-1514.jpg same as 88
