I have a 1995 Bronco with the E4OD transmission. I was having problems with it jumping in and out of gear in drive. I was told it was the shift solenoid. I replaced the solenoid and now it acts as though it slips in Drive but I have all the other gears. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cure this problem?

Yo Done0812Bar,

Try a Self Test for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC)s by my pal, BroncoJoe19

@ http://broncozone.com/topic/14269-code-reader/?pid=74587&mode=threaded

Some basics;

The engine temperature must be greater than 50° F for the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and greater than 180° F for the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.

Run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears including Reverse.

Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic); or in Neutral for a Manual & release clutch.

Then turn off engine, all accessories/lights (close driver's door) , etc.

Do KOEO test First

Post Code(s) here according to:

KOEO

&

KOER

We are looking for a code such as DTC 634; "E4OD Nagging Neutral Nonsense & Pinpoint Test, Manual Manual Lever Position (MLPS) also called Transmission Range (TR) Sensor. Some of the problems the MLPS can cause are wrong gear starts, TCC hunting, no 4th gear, engine stalling, high or erratic line pressure & a sudden neutral condition; The negative lead of the multimeter should be placed at the MLPS signal-return ground terminal at the MLPS...This sensor is responsible for more malfunctions than any other sensor in the sys- tem, and the kicker is that it seldom stores a code 634..."

Or without a code, Water Intrusion of Manual Lever Position/Transmission Range (MLP/TR) Sensor TSB 95-2-12 for 89-94; Some vehicles may exhibit a shift concern and/or a harsh engagement concern due to water intrusion into the MLP/TR sensor and vehicle harness. There may also be a number of different DTC's along with those concerns.

Replace the MLP/TR sensor and vehicle harness connector if signs of water penetration are evident. MLPS IS ON DRIVER SIDE OF TRANSMISSION.

Is the Transmission Control Indicator Light (TCIL) blinking while driving? It is also ref to as the OD on/off LED/Switch @ end of tranny gear stalk.

I'll get it as soon as I get a chance. It did have a lot of clutch material in the bottom of the pan hen I changed the solenoid. The OD light doesn't flash. It was getting a sudden neutral condition when I would come to a stop or reduce speed to a slower speed. I would put it in second and it would go. Then after I got the speed up to around 45 I could put it in drive and it would shift. But it would do the same thing every time I would stop.
