95 Eddie Bauer small upgrades

I am new to all this stuff and have a smaller budget. I drive a 1995 bronco Eddie Bauer and I am thinking about smaller upgrades/fixes. Have any suggestions?

Driving in the heat of the day in Florida she runs a little hot. On the highway the gauge reads on the letter L in normal. ( the temperature gauge uses the word normal not temperature )Also have some problems with late and hard shifts.

Have heard a lot about cold air intake and all but does that really work.

Read in an LMC ford truck magazine that says a certain header can boost by 10% mpg and 20% on hp is that true?

Any suggestions and pros/cons of what I mentioned?

I guess you have the E4OD, if so, Consider a cooler, such as Cooler, B&M Installation in a 93

Have you flushed your cooling system in past year or 2?

If not then it may need a power flush.

Is the Transmission Control Switch (TCS) and Indicator Lamp (aka overdrive on/off switch and led) blinking while driving?

Some basics;

The engine temperature must be greater than 50° F for the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Self-Test and greater than 180° F for the Key On Engine Running (KOER) Self-Test.

Run it around to heat the engine up and shift thru all gears including Reverse.

Make sure A/C is off and transmission is in Park (automatic); or in Neutral for a Manual & release clutch.

Then turn off engine, all accessories/lights (close driver's door) , etc.

Do KOEO test First

Hey Stipe,  welcome.

I live in Fl. too.  having the temp gauge at the "L" s a bit high.

I replaced my thermostat with a 180 instead of the 190....I had a 160 in but it took too long to heat up in the winter and my wife complained.

Be sure the rad and condenser are clear of bugs and debris. 

I have not found headers that really improve the performance unless the engine is running high RPMs. 

You can get a K&N filter for the air box, but keeping the standard filter clean and replacing often is just as good.

Stay away from the "cold air intake" kits that use a filter under the hood.  They actually cause more heated air to be induced than cold air.  I insulated the air horn to the grill and made an insulated box around my intake. ( it came from the previous owner with one of the "cold air intake " systems that was a disaster.)

My opinion : keep the stock exhaust, and intake and insulate the air box and intake tube. Give the engine a good tune and a good set of plugs if you haven't already.

When new mine would would stumble, backfire at slow speeds on a hot day.

The intake  situated on the core support is a bad location, on a 90°.day teh temp. at that location was 165° at low speeds.

I installed a dryer vent hose on the bottom of air box, ran to the opening nest to the radiator, used a sheetmetal vent to hold it in.

Problem solved.

As Ron and kenrh advised,

Air Tube & Box Insulation pics in a 94 5.0; Ken used Reflectix Insulation, avail @ Lowes. etc. ST16025 - 16" x 25 feet. miesk5 Note; Ken installed the K&N® & removed the cold air intake tube that runs to the top of the radiator; but he could have installed the intake tube section later.
