The past several weeks my 96 Bronco (351W) just randomly shuts off when I'm driving, and I am unable to restart it unless someone jumps me.

The alternator is good, and my batteries are full strength.

at first I thought it was a ground wire, so I cleaned them up good, and I ran for about a week before it shut off on me again.  then I put my code reader on when it shut off, and got the cod P0320 (Ignition/Dist Engine, Speed Input Circuit Malfunction)

Does anyone know where this circuit is? after some research I saw someone said something about the ECM module.

Any information will help, such as location.

Thanks,

Yo,

P0320 - Ignition Engine Speed Input Circuit Malfunction, aka Misfire Sensor, see below for more info. The input signal to PCM is continuously monitored. The test fails when the signal indicates that two successive erratic profile ignition pickup (PIP) pulses have occurred.

Symptoms;

Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Lack/Loss of Power

The engine may be harder to start

The engine may stumble or stall

Loose or corroded or faulting wires/connectors.

Possible Cause:

Low battery voltage.

Open/Shorted circuits.

Damaged distributor cap, rotor, plugs or plug wires.

Damaged coil, ICM, or PCM aka ECM.

...

Section 03-14: Engine Controls, Electronic

1996 F-150, F-250, F-350, F-Super Duty Series and Bronco Vehicles Workshop Manual

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Misfire Sensor

The misfire sensor is an electromagnetic inductance coil similar in operation to a camshaft or crankshaft position sensor. A four-point stator, or pulse ring, located behind the crankshaft damper generates an electrical impulse in the sensor at each 90 degrees of rotation. The powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) monitors the sensor pulses and flags any misfire events. When a specified number of misfires occur within a certain time frame, the powertrain control module will alert the driver to the condition by turning on the malfunction indicator light (MIL).

NOTE: Misfire sensor is not required on 49 State/Canada 7.5L engine. It is required on a 7.5L California engine.

Installation View, Misfire Sensor and Pulse Ring

I will try to find the Ford pin point textbook you asap, but may need to send it to you because of image sizes.

Btw, some on line sources seem to dwell on replacing parts and tell folks to spend $$$ on new pcm, or icm without troubleshooting. For now inspect for Loose or corroded or faulting wires/connectors, etc, entioned above at coil, distributor, icm, pcm, etc

Thanks M,

this would also prevent the engine from starting again?

which leads me to believe ECM, is bad.   but I will check these things to see if I can find a resolution.

THANKS!

Hey Miesk5, do you have the pinpoint test online anywhere or another way I can access it.  Strangly, my Bronco started doing the exact same thing last month.

Yo taviswest,

Welcome!

Will try to get it tonight and post ASAP, but probably not until morning.

For now,

Fords pin-point test that a Ford dealer tech would do uses Ford's old Break-Out Box; so, as I mentioned in another thread here; In place of the break-out box, go to the EECV connector pin instead; Substitute EECV connector pin Number for breakout box number.

NC1 CONTINUOUS MEMORY DTC P0320: ERRATIC IGNITION

Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0320 indicates two successive erratic Profile Ignition Pickup (PIP) pulses occurred resulting in a possible engine miss or stall.

Possible causes:

Loose wires/connectors.

On-board transmitter (2-way radio).*

Are any of the above present?

*Verify all 2-way radio installations. Carefully follow manufacturer's installation instructions regarding the routing of antenna and power leads.

Yes SERVICE as necessary. Complete PCM Reset to clear DTCs (REFER to Section 2A, Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Reset). RERUN Quick Test.

SECTION 6A: Pinpoint Test

Z1 INTERMITTENT TEST PROCEDURE

Note: All Intermittent Procedures are used in conjunction with the Intermittent Symptom Charts and the Typical Diagnostic Reference Values at the end of the pinpoint.

If directed here from another pinpoint test, refer to PIDs, circuits or components that were recommended or else refer to the Symptom Chart at the end of the pinpoint for the proper selection.

Based on the Intermittent Prioritization Chart, choose an Intermittent Diagnostic Procedure below:

Input Test - This test is used on sensing devices such as temperature, position, oxygen, etc.

Output Test - This test is used on output devices such as relays, coils, solenoids, etc.

Water Soak Test - This test is used on both input and output devices. Especially useful on spark plug wires, relays and hall effect sensors.

Road Test - This test is used on both input and output devices. Four modes of engine operation are monitored for intermittent.

Note: The electronic ignition (EI) system tester is not capable of diagnosing coil on plug (COP) systems.

Ignition Test - This test is for non coil on plug only and used to diagnose the ignition system using the Electronic Ignition (EI) System Tester. Coil on plug applications will use the input, output, water soak and road test only. Select the next priority from the intermittent prioritization chart.

Have you chosen an Intermittent Diagnostic Test procedure?

Yes For the Input Test: GO Z10.

For Output Test: GO to Z20.

For Water Soak Test: GO to Z30.

For Road Test: GO to Z40.

For Ignition Test: GO to Z50.

No To diagnose other driveability symptoms, GO to Symptom Flowcharts, Symptom Flowcharts.

Yo,

Figures, screen froze after I tried to add more info this morning.

Here is most of it:

The Parameter Identification (PID) mode allows access to powertrain control module (PCM) information. This includes analog and digital signal inputs and outputs along with calculated values and system status. There are two types of PID lists available and both are used throughout this manual. The first is the Generic (J1979) OBDII PID list. This is a standard set of PIDs for all manufacturers all scan tools must be able to access. The second is a Ford specific (J2190) list which can be accessed by an adequate scan tool. When accessing any of these PIDs, the values will be continuously updated. The Generic or Ford PID list provides definitions and values in appropriate units. For more information, refer to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J2205 document.

Enuf of the engineers explanation. A scan tool that can show PIDs basically shows the operating values on sensors and devices such as temperature, (Engine coolant temperature (ECT)), position (Throttle Position Sensor ( TPS)), & oxygen (Oxygen Sensor (O2)), etc.

& on devices such as relays, coils, solenoids, etc.

Yo, Part 2,

Ford states "Wiggle and pull each component wire (Signal, Signal Return and VREF, if applicable) from the component back to the PCM connector."

This means you will need to remove the wiring harness wrap and what Ford calls the harness's "Locator" that is just a clip that hold the harness in place.

As for the Signal, Signal Return and VREF wires, just wiggle each wire on the sensor or device. For example, on the Throttle Position Sensor ( TPS) there are 3 wires;

VREF - Brown/White

TP SIG - Gray/White

SIG RTN -Gray/Red

As you gonthrough the test note those on a sheet of paper.

For others wiggle each wire and note those on a sheet of paper.

For the PID acronyms, see this;

http://diagrams.hissind.com/ford-pid-list/

I tried to copy and paste them, but... screen froze.

BTW, I think the zone has a big issue.

Yo,

Some dealers may not do these tests. An automotive electric shop may do them for you if you pass on doing them. It is not easy, I knowe. But at least you have an idea of what needs to be tested and to be able to ask questions.
