I was driving my bronco last night and my brake pedal was getting stuck to the floor... So my truck was not able to move even though it was on drive. I'm not sure if that's the problem but I'm assuming that's the issue I'm having.  It seems like my brake pedal is getting stuck and is not coming back up once I remove my foot. Also I've noticed that my emergency brake does not work. Can someone help me solve this case? Thank you guys! I appreciate all your help!

Do the brakes work when NOT having these episodes..?

Have you inspected your brakes..? (wheels off) :-B

Pretty sure there's a return spring under the dash. However, best guess would be a master cylinder issue.

When you say.., "stuck to the floor"  do you mean that literally..?  i.e. all the way to the floorboard..?

This sounds serious & life threatening..!   Brakes are #1 when it comes to maintaince.

This vehicle shouldn't be on the road 'til it's up to spec. as to brakes & emergency brake..!! [-X

Your description is a little confusing.  If you mean that it appears like the brakes do not release, I have seen this problem several times.  In each case it was caused by deteriorated rubber brake hoses.  The rubber material can become detached inside the line and act as a valve which allows the brakes to be applied but prevents the pressure from releasing when you remove your foot from the peddle.  If you wait long enough the pressure will eventually decrease as the fluid leaks back around the obstruction.  An easy way to diagnose this is to create the problem by pressing the peddle and then crack the bleed valve one at a time to see if the brake releases.

Good luck,

:)>-

Ditto what Bob said on the safety of this situation.  That truck should not be driven until you fix the problem.

Hello Guys, I checked my brakes by taking the wheels off and they look fine. I was reading that my brake booster could be the issue that's causing my brake petal to stay on the floor. I am not able to pump by brakes... at all. Once I put my foot on the brake to stop they don't come back up... The only way to release the brake is by putting my foot under the petal and brining it up myself. The master cylinder has fluid inside of it... Since I haven't figured the out problem I'm not driving the vehicle.

Also, when I try to use the emergency break it does not stay locked in. I can pressed the pedal down with my foot but then it comes back up on its own... Even if I don't pull on the emergency brake release handle. Please let me know if you need clarification. Thank you.

Yo,

Can you stop the Bronco before pedal reaches floor?

Or does pedal sink to floor with no braking at all?

Excessive Brake Pedal Travel, Brake Pedal Feels Spongy When Fully Applied

Rear brakes out of adjustment.

ADJUST rear brakes.

Front wheel bearing out of adjustment.

ADJUST front wheel bearings.

Brake master cylinder or power brake booster mounting loose.

TIGHTEN nuts and bolts to specification.

disc brake caliper attachment loose.

REPLACE or TIGHTEN as required.

Worn or damaged self-adjusters.

REMOVE brake drum and CHECK rear brake shoe and lining for proper adjustment. REPLACE brake shoe adjusting lever.

Brake pedal or support improperly mounted.

REPAIR or REPLACE as necessary.

Worn or damaged brake linings.

REPLACE brake shoe and lining.

Brake drum out-of-round or front or rear disc brake rotors with excessive runout.

REFINISH or REPLACE if wear exceeds limits.

Brake tubing improperly positioned.

CHECK brake tubing for misposition near heat source. Fluid can boil and result in spongy pedal response.

Low brake fluid level.

FILL as required.

Clogged brake master cylinder filler cap hole.

REPAIR or REPLACE brake master cylinder filler cap.

Air in system.

BLEED system.

***

Parking Brake Will Not Hold:

Parking brake cable out of adjustment.

ADJUST parking brake lever.

Rear brakes out of adjustment.

ADJUST rear brake drums.

Parking brake linkage, cable, parking brake control, clevis or ratchet binding, worn or damaged.

REPAIR or REPLACE linkage or parking brake cables as required.

I do not advise driving it until you have a mechanic look at it.

The brake pedal works when I apply the brakes to stop the truck. But the only way the pedal comes back up is by putting my foot under the pedal and raising the pedal back up with my foot. Then, I can drive again, and when I need to stop again, I apply the brakes and I stop the truck.

If I don't put my foot under the brake pedal (to raise it back up) I will not move at all.

Anytime I want to stop, the brake petal makes a squeaky noise like if it needs WD-40. I looked at the pedal and it looks rusted. Initially, I applied WD-40 thinking that it would help but pedal still does not come back up. (Unless I use my foot to bring back up). I have no problem stopping the vehicle.... I just have a problem getting my pedal back up... and like I said before my emergency pedal does not work at all. When I apply the emergency pedal, it does not stay in position at all. Nor does it stop the truck.

I'm not too familiar with mechanical work therefore its hard to explain my situation.

I hope you understand.  Thank you

Yo,

Ok. My guess now is the bushings and shaft are corroded/ rusty. Clean and grease.

I think someone else here had same problem with pedal not returning. Seabronc may know.

A wag is the booster, but that is a guess,

Is there a return spring under the dash..?

I would think most all veh. have this spring.., but I've been wrong B/4

As to e-brake..., if it's dirty.., the ratchet part may be stuck open, rusted, etc.

I purchased a new master cylinder and brake booster, this fixed the problem with the pedal not returning. Does the Emergency Brake need to stay in place, and released when I pull release handle?

Yo M,

opguide86b.jpg

1986 Bronco Operating Guide

"Engage parking (emergency) brake as described.

To release the parking brake, press the service brake pedal with your right foot and pull the parking brake release lever.

WARNING:

Do not leave the vehicle unattended with the transfer case in the N (Neutral) position. Always set the parking brake fully and turn off the ignition when leaving the vehicle."

by Ford

Parking Brake Will Not Apply;

ADJUST brake lining cable to take up slack in brake linkage.

Grease-soaked linings. REPAIR source of leak, INSTALL new linings.

Excessive linkage friction. CHECK for linkage binding, and misalignment. LUBRICATE all pivot points.

Worn out linings. REPLACE parking brake shoe and lining. CHECK drum/yoke for scoring and REPLACE if necessary.

btw,

What is your given name, if you are to tell us?

GL!

Al
