Hello, I have a 71 that I'm redoing. Just put a new alternator 65 amp and a new voltage regulator problem is all the wires are missing. My harness goes down passenger side fender to headlight but has a split in it by solinold which is a 3 prong plug. I see the diagram for alt to regulator. But do I need to tie in to the harness or not ???? What's the best way to do it. Thanks

Hi JC.., welcome..!

Can you elaborate a bit...?  Some pics would help.  What (all) wires are missing..?

Give us a better idea what you're starting with.  Was the truck running b4 you started this  Alt. & volt. reg. project..?

Yea was running but alternator not hooked up. Put new regulator , pig tail and a new alternator. All I have is wires from regulator pigtail, wires I put on alternator hanging and a 3 prong plug from harness by sylenoid. Trying to figure out how to tie them all together.

You need to show pictures of the hanging plug and the new alternator.   Did you install a direct replacement or did you install a newer style alternator?  You can post pictures of the installation using the "More Reply Options" button at the bottom left of your reply.  Select the picture you want to upload with the Browse button and then click on "Attach this file".  Make sure you pictures are not larger than 1024 x 768,  something in the 900 x range would be best. If they are larger than that, resize them.

Picture of regulator is on inside passenger fender right before the battery. Has a new 4 prong plug with wire hanging out about 10 inches

It looks like you are missing something.  From the pictures. it, it looks like you made up your own wire harness for the alternator.  That plug should have a mate that originally went to the original harness.  Here is a picture of the charge diagram for an 83 Bronco with the old style alternator and external regulator.  I don't have one for your specific truck but it should be the same.

Where is the original wire harness to the alternator?

Basically how it works is that you have  12V feed from the battery to the fuse panel.  From there a line to the ignition switch.  When you turn the key to start you  put 12v to the regulator which in turn puts voltage to the field winding of the alternator.  The ignition switch also connects to the start relay to start the engine.  Once the engine is running and the field connection allows the alternator generator to produce the current necessary to supply the vehicles electrical needs and top off the battery charge.

This diagram may be a little more complex than the EB hookup, but basically you need the same things to happen.  So you need to find the original harness.

The wire sizes for the stator and field connections in your harness, are a little over ****.  Use a number 16 or 18 from the regulator to the alternator, match what is on the regulator.  Keep the red lead to connect to the battery +,  (probably at the start relay terminal that connects to the battery).  It should go from the alternator to a fuse link and then to the battery side of the start relay.  The fused link should about 75 to 100 Amp  since the alternator is rated at 65 Amps.  That link protects the alternator from burning up in case there is some failure like a short in the battery + line.

The ignition connection to the the regulator should be from the same source that feeds the start relay pick coil.

By the way, the lugs for ground and battery charge need to be soldered not just crimped

Al, if you are following this thread, do you have a wiring diagram for the EB?

At some point, I'd have that volt. reg. tested. (it's the old style)  It may work fine but the new replacements

are electronic/solid state.    Just a "heads-up"  (as I recall, a bad volt. reg. can cause problems in the alternator)

This may be the PO's original problem/reason for disconnecting the circuit.

I may have the "charging" schematic. If needed, I'll try to copy it on my printer.

JC.., we're gonna need your help here.

If you "clean" up the areas & wires.., remove all the tools extra wires, etc. B4 shooting pics.

Straighten out the wires so we (& you) can see the colors.

You don't need a seperate post for ea. pic.  Put them all on one post.

I gave you a wiring diagram & color codes.

You can use lacquer thinner or lime-a-way to clean wires/things off so as to make notes

and/or tag ea. wire.

152 is yellow, goes to  solenoid +

904 is green/red stripe goes to   (      )

35 white, goes to alternator.... and so on.

I hooked the wires from alt to regulator and to bat.like diagram said. Had to hook the i from regulator to a wire that worked from ignition. All is working and charging good. The 3 wire plug is where I hooked for my ignition to regulator. The other 2 wires stay at 12 volts all the time, don't know what they could be for.

Thanks for all the info Bully Bob and Sea Bronc. Its charging fine.
