What is this? It is attached to my hood on the left side. There are two wires running to it. 1985 Ford Bronco XLT.

Happy 4th to you and yours....that is a retractable under hood work light.  It should have had a bulb in it.   It may still work!

This light was used on ~'80~90 Ford trucks and some Jeep Cherokees (with a different connector). It reaches ~25' and has a magnetic base. There should be a clear dome over the #90 bulb, but the retainers break easily and the bulb is often replaced with an oversize one #1004, which melts the dome.

ISSUE: This article is to provide information on replacement hood lamp switches. The 14 degree Mercury style hood switches will no longer be available. Replacement 14 degree Mechanical switches will be available as a service replacement.

ACTION: For vehicles requiring hood lamp switch replacement, replace the 14 degree Mercury switch with new 14 degree Mechanical switch. Replace hood lamp switch per the appropriate model year Workshop Manual as needed.

~25' of self-retracting cord (twists, knots, kinks, & dirt inside the case interfere), a tilt switch (which can keep the light on if the truck is parked on a steep incline), a magnet on the side of the bulb holder (for positioning the bulb on the steel body), and a globe to protect the bulb (but the bulbholder tabs break off, and the more-common oversize bulb melts the globe).

Sheesh, what will they think of next?? Guess I'd better take the unit off and give it a look-see. I tried to put the loose part back into the receiver but it falls  out. Retainer clips, as you mentioned, might be worn. Replacing the mercury buld should not be an issue, if it still exists. 

My apologize for the messy looking hood and area but it is going to be brought back to new condition as we progress. Allot has to do with your sage advice. What a hoot. I love my Bronco. 

The unit is off and apart. Wires need replacing, no big deal. The little mercury switch was still in its holder but the spring contact broke off during my cleaning efforts. Everything I have read ssays to convert it to mechanical switch. There are two part numbers so it will be necessary to enter into a dialog with the parts personnel to see which one is correct. One part number is: TSB 01-19-04  and the other is: YW1Z-15702-BA. The buld was missing and it's part number should be 13466. The globe, which I assume will be hard to find, is 15703. It is apart on my workbench pending research and parts find. Anyone who has any advice please feel free. I am listening. 

Ford no longer carries these parts due to the age of my rig. Now going to Vintage auto parts.

I would put a simple switch somewhere under the hood or on the light holder. I wouldn't worry about the globe....that is unless you are restoring the truck and want everything as it came from the factory.

WOW! These sites need to be Bookmarked. Thank you. The light has been refurbished and reinstalled sans bulb and globe and the new switch. I by passed the little Mercury switch. In fact, if there were a bulb in it it would be lit since no cut off switch has been installed yet. They make some door switches for a buck-forty five that look promising.
