I had to change a leaky axle shaft seal, and was wondering what tool I could use to install properly. (Ford sells a tool, but it is way to expensive for such a simple job.)
I have the small rear bearings, so small axle shaft seal. I was looking around my tools, and found that the front spindle nut socket is exactly the same diameter as the rear shaft seal! (Spindle nut socket was $12 at O'Reilly, and I already had it for front hub work.)
Put the seal in, turned the spindle nut socket around, and patiently tapped it using a rubber mallet to press the seal in place. Worked perfectly.
See pictures. (Not sure why they loaded upside down?)
One showing socket, one showing socket in place, one showing installed seal.
