Trying to order some parts from Jeff's and measuring my sway bar with a mic, the rear is 1/2" and the front is 5/8" Jeff's has no clue why/what, as they sell 7/8" & 1" bushings any ideas? They thought I was measuring the drop link

I can at least get the drop link bushings and I need the front axle socket for my 44 (tools rock!) and my sticker is pealing off. But I was a bit surprised at the sway bar size, cause the girl handles good in a turn, even with the 12.5x33s

Thank you sir! Not sure what's up with mine and these smaller diameter bars? That's it on 845 gonna call the local ap, the auto parts came up with something off the Ford# we will see in a couple hours.

So if all the on-line stuff shows bigger bars and I upgrade this thing ought to handle like a Lamborghini! I can already out drive these so called road cars, like BMWs in the turns. Of course this may also have contributed to the demise of the drop link bushings as the bottom half are toast!

yo RR,

I believe the issue for parts places is that they tend to Group Broncos, F Series (incl the biggies) Vans and some cars together; then the Group gets expanded further with year range errors, etc.

http://www.rockauto.com/

shows the different front and rear bar ODs;

But None for front are close to your sizes

See Energy Suspension and find a dealer(s) that stocks their products;

http://www.energysuspension.com/assets/files/energysuspension-catalog.pdf

Sway Bar Bushing Sets- Front and Rear

E100, E150, E200, E250 and E350

3 Steps To Determine The Correct Sway Bar Bushing Set

1. Identify end link type (A or B) –see Figure 1 or 2.

2. Measure height of Sway Bar Bushing–see Figure 3.

3. Measure sway bar diameter and choose the correct

set from the chart below.

can't C&P Charts, but does show 5/8” bar diameter

Scroll down to near end;

Sway Bar Tape Measure

Handy measuring tape to help you determine the the diameter of your sway bars. Carefully cut out measuring tape (DO NOT

PHOTOCOPY!*). Wrap around clean, straight portion of the sway bar and line up arrow with size marks. The size shown is your bar size! To

order the proper size bushing set refer to your vehicle application page. If no set is listed there see page 7 for universal sway bar bushing

information. For additional tape measures please call Customer Service at (949) 361-3935. Package of 25 #9.20123.

*Photocopy machines and paper thickness vary, which will result in incorrect readings.

More info;

"...Ford may have used several sizes in any one year to match the suspension characteristics to the weight of the installed options on the truck, and any suspension upgrade package. That's why you have to measure.

It's better to have a bushing that's SMALLER than your bar so that it still grips tightly. You can always remove a little material if it's too tight. So if you measured 0.98", I recommend 15/16" (0.9375"). I also recommend installing only polyurethane bushings (for ALL locations), and applying silicone grease to all their points of contact so they don't squeak..."

yo,

What model is your 93 Bronco?

XL

XLT or Eddie Bauer

does it have a factory tow package

or 4 shocks up front?

on our 96 (buried in ice and snow now) we had standard suspension package; normal 2 shocks up front w/front swap bar; no Rear Sway Bar.

Optional was Trailer Towing Package it consisted of; Trailer wiring harness, heavy-duty turn signal flasher, rear stabilizer bar (front standard), quad front and heavy-duty rear shocks, heavy-duty battery- 84 amp-hr./850 CCA (std. with Eddie Bauer), and super engine cooling

Thanks Al for all the info and links!

Yes it is an XLT with 4 shocks up front, it has a tow package which I assume is factory as the 7-pin plug doesn't work and when I looking at it underneath I saw no splices. E4OD, not sure about the alternator as it now has a 5.8 in it. VIN shows a 302 originally. I used a dial indicator to measure the bars

My parts house was a bust, I gave the girl the Ford # for the bushings, so what did she order a complete link kit with rods! And if I wanted to wait another 2 hours they could order just the bushings, I sure miss the days when parts people actually knew something about PARTS! And would confirm what you wanted, I did think it was pricey for bushings at $31, but figured Jeff's is 20 so what he heck. It was however just the top and bottom of the drop links so I still haven't found out if the bar bushing would have been correct.

A different question can you tell me the socket size for the front hub nuts on the 44?

I haven't looked in the manual yet, was gonna order it from Jeff's but the shipping is almost as much as the socket and since they can't help with the bushings it seems sort of a waste until I need more parts. So figured I can get it through NAPA or a tool truck for about the same.

Wheel Bearing Locknut Torque Settings for 80-96 MANUAL HUBS, NOT Factory Auto Hubs; Ford Pickups and Bronco; "...Using a lockout spanner (Ford # T59T-1197-B or equivalent) and a torque wrench, tighten the inner bearing adjusting nut to 50 foot pounds while rotating the wheel back and forth and seating the bearing. Back off the adjusting nut approximately 45 degrees. Assemble the lock washer by turning the inner lockout to align the pin with the nearest hole in the lock washer. To lock it, install the outer lock nut and tighten it to 150 foot pounds. Grab the top of the tire with one hand and the bottom of the tire with the other. Move the tire in and out on the spindle. End play should be less than .006 – inch.).." Thanks to 90beater (Topher, Chris)!!!!

Operational Test; "... (engine off, hubs disengaged), crawl under the truck with the transfer case in 2HI, you should be able to grab the front drive shaft and turn it by hand. Also with the hubs disengaged you should see the front axles turning freely. Now engage the hubs and you should not be able to turn the drive shaft by hand. Jack the front wheels off the ground with the hubs engaged, turn the drive shaft by hand, the wheels should turn. The 4x4 light should not be on in 2HI, when in 4LOW you may have a low range light on, (not all trucks have that light) at least mine doesn't..."

Since we bought the Bronco new in 96, have been keeping track of part numbers for various parts and collecting info from the Ford parts site that I listed in prev. reply; then found the partial parts catalog; a Ford parts person said their catalogs don't show the info that the partial cat. has.

Hey RR..  best way to measure what size sway bar you have on any vehicle is to take a bunch of open end wrenches that are about the size and find the one that fits the bar the best at about the middle...not too loose and not so small it won't fit over

EG:  a 7/8 open end won't fit over and the 15/16 is just barely snug...you have a 15/16 sway bar.

Truthfully I never heard of a 1/2 " sway bar...even on little things like my wife's  SLK.

Good Luck

Thanks Ron, I'll give it a try, as I mentioned I measured the bar with a caliper, even took a photo with my phone as I thought it was strange. But it did not attach on the first post. However like you said the wrench will be different.

I have to go check the front hubs here shortly, of course today it's in the 50s and damp as opposed to the 70/80s we've had, so I'd rather stay inside and sort last nights concert photos. But I told her I'd look at her today.

Well I got the front bearings repacked, glad I finished it last night when it was in the 70s, as today it's the 30s with a windchill around 27.

As for the sway bars they are 7/8" and 1", with a wrench, which still makes no sense to me as the are physically 1/2 & 5/8? On my Vette the 1" bar was 1", but at least now I can order them from Jeff's and get polyurethane and red, to match the truck! It's very important to color coordinate your accessories, my shock boots are red as well. It matters not that you can't see any of it.
