Hey Ya'll...

Pretty sure I am going to be really, really happy about finding this site. I am no stranger to to the Ford family and owned a 1992 F-150 4X4 that was lifted and had 36" tires but only had stock 302 drive train and rear end and I eventually killed the motor. I'll post pics later. So then I met what is now my wife and she is a huge fan of the Bronco so I bled over into the community. She loves the 92-96 Eddie Bauer editions. Anyway, I digress. So recently, a used auto salesman friend of ours is hanging with us on a Sunday and says...just picked up a Bronco at auction, haven't seen it yet. 1996, air, 1 owner, good shape, high miles...my wife says, "I'll take it!!", sight unseen. :glare: Now I am here and the restoration begins. Stay tuned to my other posts on the progress on each thing I tackle and first and foremost is the current rear end.

Thanks,
Roy

yo ROY, WELCCOME!

That 96 looks as new!

here are some Links for you;

96 Bronco-F-Series Workshop Manual (PARTIAL) by FORD via

http://www.diesel-dave.com/vehic/manual/stj/stjleft.htm

96 is same as most earlier years especially 92-96, except for:

92 through 95 uses the Electronic Engine Control, version Four (EEC-IV, aka On Board Diagnostics (OBD-I)) engine management computer.

96 uses the OBD-II (EEC-V) engine management computer;

4WABS (93-96);

RABS (87-92);

Air Bag (94-96);

3 ***** Automatic Locking Hubs (Built from May 95 through 96); Spark Plug Wire Routing & Firing Order (The firing order for 1987-1993 5.0Ls is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. The firing order for 1994- 96 5.0Ls & all 5.8Ls is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8.);

R134a in 94-96;

2-piece Spindle Rolling Diaphragm Seal (RDS) used on 5/95 to 96 Broncos & F Series 1/2-ton 4WD;

Speed density EFI uses a Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP), a Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), an Air Intake Temperature Sender (ACT) that gives the engine certain volumetric efficiencies over it's RPM range. Speed density EFI also uses what is called bank fire injection. 4 injectors are fired at one time on each side of the engine (only 2 wires for firing injectors from EEC-IV).

Mass Air Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI), aka Sequential Electronic Fuel Injection (SEFI)  MAF in 94-95 5.0 and 95 5.8 California models and in all 96 5.0 and 5.8. Mass Air directly reads the mass of air (or number of molecules of air). By doing this, it can detect the changes in the volume of air, in addition to it's pressure & temperature. Mass air has one separate wire for each injector & fires them twice for every power stroke of the engine. This makes the injector timing more accurate & will help emissions along with power.

96 5.8 do not have the Air Injection (AIR), Secondary Air Injection; Pump (Smog Pump), Thermactor Air Bypass (TAB) & Thermactor Air Diverter (TAD) Solenoids; Diverter, Check & Bypass Valves, Cross-Over Tube, etc. But 96 5.0 does have the system.

Only 95 5.8L California models & all 96 have the Differential Pressure Feedback (DPFE) Sensor instead of EGR Valve Position (EVP) Sensor.

The 96, Vapor Management Valve (VMV) replaces the canister purge valve (CanP valve) used in EEC IV. But the 96 manual still shows CanP valve probably because it was a late addition to the 96 production line.

The Speed Control Deactivation Switch (SCDS) in a 93 Bronco is located on the driver side frame rail, but in 94 through 96 it is on the master cylinder.

Still researching other differences.

Miesk5,

Appreciate the great information. I guess I should have mentioned that the Bronco has the 351 in it (Windsor or Cleveland? I don't know.). The body and interior are in great shape with little to no wear and very little rust that can be seen so far. The motor has about 245,000 miles so I am also being careful with that. The current project, which has become a necessity, is the rear end. When I hit the throttle from a stop, you can hear a loud clunk. Same when you hit the throttle (slowly) in reverse. I've had it looked at and the mechanics (friends of mine) said its not drive shafts or u-joints so they moved on to the rear end. Below is the tag I took off the rear pumpkin last night. I'm flying blind on fixing it so any advice is appreciated. We can also move over to the tech support portion of the forum.

Thanks,
Roy

yo Roy,

anytime!

"...Rear axles (4001) have a metal tag secured under adjacent axle housing cover bolt heads listing Ford and Dana part numbers and the ratio. Front drive axles have a similar tag.

The plant code on the axle identification tag is to be used as the official service identifier.

I have lousy screen resolution... so see if the Ford info above makes sense

Clunk, Driveshaft; "...could be a few things.. U-joints going out on the driveshaft, slip shaft needs greasing or 3rd member is warn and loose. get under and see if there is any side to side movement with the ujoints on the shaft, there shouldnt be any side movement at all; than grease your slip-join...

& by ElKabong (Ken, El Kabong); Instead of sliding into the t-case like a car driveshaft would into a trans, a Bronco driveshaft normally is two pieces that slide together. The slipshaft is normally covered by a rubber boot in the middle ---; When you check the u-joints as Spiked described, park it on a flat spot, block the wheels & put it in neutral. That way the driveshaft will be free to move if the u-joints are bad..."

Slipshaft (aka Slip Yoke, Slip Joint) Greasing by nezzer

Felix wrore; "Did everybody take notice to the blue Sharpie at the bottom of the picture? Neezer used it to make reference marks on the driveshaft so the whole thing can be oriented and re-assembled the same way it came out."

96 driveshaft.gif

The driveshaft slip yoke and transmission output shaft permit fore and aft movement of the driveshaft as the rear axle moves up and down. This provides smooth performance during vehicle operation

U-Joint Inspection:

Prior to checking driveline angularity, inspect the universal joints for proper operation.

Place the vehicle on a frame hoist and rotate the driveshaft (4602) by hand. Check for rough operation or seized universal joints. If the universal joint shows signs of seizure, excessive wear or improper seating, scribe alignment marks on the driveshaft and rear axle companion ******. Remove the driveshaft and remove and replace the universal joint. Install the driveshaft in the marked original position

I'm another new person, I have an 89 F250 XLT LARIAT 4X4 5 spd 351W that threw a clutch fan the other day and punched a hole in the rad. Wanting to convert to an electric cooling fan in place of the old outdated clutch fan. Is it possible and how do I do that on a limited budget? Thinking about using a toggle switch on the dash for the fan, but not sure if it's a good idea. Any help is appreciated.

It will make it easier for others to keep track of what has been offered to you and to chime in with more info; and to not confuse your year F Series and engine issues with the original poster.
