Can anyone tell me what the difference between Part time and full time 4wd is?

I have a Ford Bronco with a 4 speed man. tranny hooked up to a 400, again, if anyone can tell me what the transmission might be, plus the transfer case.

And the same question for a 77 F150 I have. Man. 4 speed hooked to a 300. I want to know the Transmission and the transfer case...

If anyone can help me, i would appreciate it all.

Hi Brando..,

Just google/yahoo those trucks & you'll get the factory set-ups. (eng., trannie, & T-case packages.)

"Part time" just means you have to get out & manually lock in/out the hubs.

No experience with "full time" here but, I've heard many folks switch over to "manual" for frequent

4x4'n.

Okay, its just kind of a cheap way of finding what transfer case is because the 203 is part time and 205 is full time... I think. Still want to know the trannys though. Thanks for the information you have me though.

i always thought of Full-time 4x4 as being ALWAYS in four wheel drive, like no way to take it out of 4x4. part time 4x4 as being like typical trucks that have the option to shift the transfer case to where only the rear tires are driven / powered.

Is there a way for me to find out what the difference is? I need to replace the rear drive shaft in a 78 Bronco and those are the differences in the shafts. I was always under the impression that full time was kinda like AWD, but with the ability of placing the transfercase  in lower gears. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Also is there a way know if parts from newer Broncos would fit my 78?

Thanks in advance

You got it Elmo!

FS Broncos do not have full time 4x4.  If a Full size bronco was run 4x4 full time it would destroy the front end.  You should never run a bronco in 4x4 on dry pavement.

Actually 78-79 Broncos could come from the factory with full-time 4wd.

Full-time 4wd Broncos have a NP203 transfer case. The NP203 has a differential inside of it just like a front/rear end. It allows the front end and rear end to travel at different speeds in normal driving. When you are in bad terrain you pull the shifter to hi lock or low lock and this locks the differential in the NP203. The front end and rear end then turn at the same speeds together. Full-time 4wd Broncos don't have external locking hubs.

Part-time 4wd Broncos have a NP205 transfer case with external locking hubs.

I have both a full-time 4wd Bronco and a part-time 4wd Bronco. The full-time 4wd Bronco handles way better on the road.

Thanks for the info.  I obviously do not have a handle on pre-1980 Bronco's.  Didn't know that.
